We are looking to do some minor "remodeling" on our existing getaway home and thought this book may help provoke some new ideas. Although I did glean a few insights, in my opinion, the book is primarily for new home buyers looking for an architect or existing home owners planning major renovations to an existing site. Don't get me wrong, if I were looking for an architect this is a guy I would want to talk to. The book basically takes you on a tour of 24 homes and highlights the design requirements dictated by the surrounding environment and your familiy's activities. Each page has a picture of some aspect of the home accompanied by a either a site plan or floor plan with a brief overview of each project. Book is a quick read and reminded me of an issue of Architectural Digest dedicated to getaway homes. A good resource if you can get a used copy for a buck or two.

Dale is the man when it comes to great cabin books and design. His other books are fantastic and should be purchased before this one for sure. The Getaway Home feels like all the left overs from his other books. There are great pictures, but it isn't memorable or sufficient in terms of content. I didn't learn anything new with this book, but I did see nice pictures.

If you need a coffee table book and can get a good deal then consider it, but it won't be the book to deliver inspiration or great ideas.

I bought this book over a year ago. I think it is a nice book. Lost of nice pictures of good quality.
That is what i want in a book about architecture. Of course you must like this style to like this book.

I have enjoyed the reviews of each special place and look forward to building one of my own. This book is great for inspiration of the classic american getaway.
