Lubar is Associate Professor of Fine Arts, New York University, Institute of Fine Arts, where he received his PhD. He has published extensively on modern Spanish artists, especially Dali and Picasso.

The Salvador Dalí Museum is an art museum in St. Petersburg, Florida, United States, dedicated to the works of Salvador Dalí. It houses the largest collection of Dalí's works outside Europe. It is located on the downtown St. Petersburg waterfront by 5th Avenue Southeast, Bay Shore Drive, and Dan Wheldon Way. On April 18, 2012, the AIA's Florida Chapter placed the building on its list of Florida Architecture: 100 Years.

Salvador Dalí’s work is world famous because of its brilliant depictions of objects that seem to melt into human bodies or natural landscapes. The book is a wonderful review of the works of Dali some with brief descriptions. Is it a frequent reference - no. Is it an enjoyable ride when you do look at it - oh yes.

Somehwat of a disappointment for me. Yes the introduction is interesting, but it is an overview and does not cover all the pictures contained in the book. Because I find Dali so fascinating, I wanted to learn more. I would have enjoyed the book much more if each work of art had been discussed.

I think I got it mostly to feel more sophisticated, because Salvador Dali is never an artist that I (or possibly anyone) have ever understood. It's a great book and covers a multitude of his paintings and what his life was like at that particular time, and what many of the symbols could mean.
It's a good coffee table book, but I've never really read it with much depth. Quite honestly his art disturbs me, so I can only look at his art for so long before I get squeamish.
Good for art history book collectors, or true art connoisseurs.

Recently, I visited Salvador Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida and saw many of his works. Of course, in the back of my mind, I needed to read a book to explain his surreal works and the meaning behind various objects. One thing I was guessing and therefore proved to be correct was there must be some kind of a relation to sex that seemed to be a subtlety of perverted sexuality. Of course, reading Lubar's book explained many of the phallic and vaginal representations and their detumescence and erection in Dalí's paintings.

Anyway, apart from the symbolism of his paintings, it is interesting to see the maturity of Dali as an artist through different styles over course of time, and his works are obviously ingenuous. There are times that Lubar might be reading too much into them although he is probably correct in many of his analyses.

All in all, Lubar's Dali: The Salvador Dali Museum Collection has given me a better understanding of Dalí's works.
