This is an excellent review of old Irish manuscript books, together with some of the history of early Christian Ireland. I like to do calligraphy myself and find Courtney Davis's book to be very informative. The book list alone was worth the price of the book. It's not a book on calligraphy, but on the old Irish books. Very informative, and nicely done BW art and color plate examples of the Irish art style in old handwritten religious books.

You could use this book as a coloring book, but that's not why I got it. I am fascinated by just following the patterns as they weave through each other. There's a bit of explanation for each pattern but mostly just the illuminations themselves. Very meditative.

You have to be very careful when navigating books for celtic designs, calligraphy, illuminated letters and so on because there are a lot of books out there. You can find incredibly inexpensive ones, such as Dover Publications, but then be disappointed that the drawings or plates are all black and white. According to this 1998 book, as of 1977, Courtney Davis had written 28 books. He has exhibited his celtic art all over Europe and the US. He lives in Abbotsbury, Dorset, a most appropriate-sounding home town.

This book has 96 pages with 106 drawings, only 8 of which are in color. I know, I know...it's frustrating to know how to color or stitch these designs. However, the 8 color plates are very pleasant and can inspire how to handle the smaller drawings. BTW, the front cover is the beginning of the 12th century Psalter of Cormac. But the accompanying discussion of every single drawing's origin is captivating. The earliest celtic manuscripts are from the 6th century and this book takes you right up to the 19th century. The bibliography's biggest contributor is the author himself. See his and many other related books:
