Irving Kriesberg (1919–2009) was an American painter whose work combined elements of Abstract Expressionism with figurative. When Irving Kriesberg was born in 1919, Pablo Picasso was already 38 years old. Along with Matisse (Picasso’s rival), the elder Spanish artist had an undeniable influence on many American painters from Kriesberg’s generation. Irving referenced his painterly influences from time to time, an example is seen in his painting The Cat (1986), which is a riff on Picasso’s 1939 painting Cat Catching a Bird.

Irving Kriesberg (March 13, 1919 – November 11, 2009) was an American painter whose work combined elements of Abstract Expressionism with figurative elements of human and animal forms. Kriesberg made his debut with Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko at the 1952 exhibition, Fifteen Artists, at the New York Museum of Modern Art.
