When Irving Kriesberg was born in 1919, Pablo Picasso was already 38 years old. Along with Matisse (Picasso’s rival), the elder Spanish artist had an undeniable influence on many American painters from Kriesberg’s generation. Irving referenced his painterly influences from time to time, an example is seen in his painting The Cat (1986), which is a riff on Picasso’s 1939 painting Cat Catching a Bird.
