Emma Dexter has been Director of Visual Arts at the British Council since 2014. Prior to that, she was Exhibitions Director at Timothy Taylor Gallery London, and was a Senior Curator at Tate Modern, London from 2000 to 2007. There she curated retrospective exhibitions by Frida Kahlo and Luc Tuymans, major exhibitions by Pierre Huyghe and Bruce Nauman, and co-curated Tate's first ever dedicated photography exhibition 'Cruel and Tender' in 2003.

This is a book that when you first open it up and flip through a couple of pages you will be saying to yourself that you have to sit down with it for a long considered look. Myself, I just looked at the care that Phaidon press took while publishing this, from its rough artistic pages to the in-depth look at contemporary drawing and knew instantly that this was a survey book that I would be opening time and again for years to come.

The artists that are covered here are not neccisarily unknown. Pettibon, Peyton, and other long standing luminaries stand along side scores of other artists that I had never heard of. What it is, is a survey of non-illustration/often conceptualy based drawing that is occuring today be the artist known or obscure.

If you are into drawing, this is a must have book. One thing to keep in mind is that the format presented here is pretty much along the lines of Vitamin P and the three 'Cream' books. I think all four of these ranged from good to great, if you disagree with this sentiment, you might not like 'Vitamin D.'

As an art student who often struggles with formulating ideas, this book has been a great source of inspiration for my work. Drawing in a sense has been given great currency in today's art market and this book offers incredible insight and continues to inform my work from time to time. ????????

My professor made us purchase this for our drawing class as inspiration, but we don't actually use it. Honestly, I am not that inspired by the art in this book, and since she does not explicitly reference pages or chapters in this book or have us do things out of it, it was a bit of a waste IMO. I would not have bought the book on my own accord.

I don't get it. It contains lots of abstract paintings that elude me.

This book is an amazing collection of art and artists that would appeal to a person interested in drawing. I like the focus on drawing alone.
The print is gorgeous. The matte printing provides a good view of the images in detail. However, I wish the cover was not just a simple paper. For the sake of longevity, I would have to cover this book because the cover is so weak.

This is a book that I recommend to artists. It's a great book to reference on when you have no clue on your next project or piece. I fell in love with the book when I had to do a book report on several of the artists presented in the book. I couldn't help but look at each page and read up on all artists, mind you I only had two hours to have the book since it was on special reserve in the library. So I decided to buy the book instead. A little pricey for me but bought it used instead. Still in great condition besides the jacket but I can careless. This book is a must buy!
