com stopped way short. I was reminded of . Barrett's study I first encountered in Walter Korn's entertaining work, American Chess Art: 250 Portraits of Endgame Study. The solver should be made to demonstrate the stair-step method to pick up the h2 pawn with check and then reverse the procedure to place the queen on e7 to prevent. Barrett's study, a more direct though less natural composition, was first printed in The Dubuque Chess Journal in 1874, so this method goes back a ways, perhaps even further. I tried to find this study on-line but without luck, so here it is.
