This fascinating book, which accompanied a major exhibition at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford and the Städel Museum, Frankfurt, sets out to re-appraise the work of 17th-century landscape painter Claude Lorrain and look at it through fresh eyes. It unites in a single volume paintings, drawings and prints from all periods of the artist's life, highlighting not only the well-documented similarities between paintings and related works on paper, but also the essential differences between these different art forms.

A small but interesting book on an artist that is at once known & unknown. Before purchasing this book I had a number of other books that had many of Lorrain's paintings but not brought together in one publication. So when this book was announced, I was quite excited! But once I received it I realized that for $50 you feel a little shortchanged. The text is rather brief, but well written. The reproductions of the paintings are "OKAY" but realistically don't buy this book expecting a monograph quantity of reproductions (not that it was advertised that way). For the stature of an artist like Claude Lorrain, this publication falls short of anything resembling a detailed examination of an artist that is crying-out for a serious survey of his brilliant career.
