It Was Good: Making Art to the Glory of God ebook

by Ned Bustard

The book clarifies what it is to live life giving glory to God through art, not because it is "Christian" art or art that . Regardless of your views on the arts, It Was Good should be required reading for anyone interested in the arts and culture.

The book clarifies what it is to live life giving glory to God through art, not because it is "Christian" art or art that preaches but rather because you serve the triune God your art can have meaning and depth. There's certainly something for everyone here: "art" is a broad term encompassing not only painting and sculpture, but also music, film, drama, literature and much more.

The goal of this book is to provide a deeper discussion of what believers practicing their discipline for God's glory would (or should) look like.

It Was Good is a collection of essays from a lot of great people on a variety of issues surrounding faith and art. As with any compilation, some essays are better than others, but there is a lot of outstanding material here. Some chapters that stood out to me were those written by Tim Keller, Makoto Fujimura, Edward Knippers, Ned Bustard, and Karen Mulder. If you want to think seriously about the arts without giving facile answers this book should be in your library. Thankful for Square Halo.

Still, one of the best books we’ve ever stocked? Yep, it is on our very short list. Let me tell you why I make that audacious claim. Just the artwork shown is fascinating, with Ned’s surprising choices of all kinds of (mostly modern) illuminations to accompany the text. I just love books like this, and I hope you do to! 5. Excellent endorsements. I know that sometime authors toss off superlatives as favors to publishers and the business of blurbing can make anybody wonder. But nobody needs to endorse a quiet book from Square Halo; this isn’t Tom Clancey or Rick Warren, you know.

A Christian should use these arts to the glory of God, not just as tracts, mind you, but as things of beauty to the praise of God. An art work can be a doxology in itself.

Ned Bustard has released a follow-up anthology to his earlier book, It Was Good: The Making of Art to The Glory of God (Baltimore: Square Halo, 2007). Bustard notes in the preface that the task of glorifying God through music is diverse, and warns the reader to expect some disagreement between the contributors’ different perspectives. The book’s diversity can seem like a mixed bag to a casual observer. I was glad to see the inclusion of Charlie Peacock (I love/loved the Civil Wars, now defunct).

The collection of essays is impressive, and while some will find specific topics and writing styles more compelling than others, this book has a lot to offer anyone interested in learning more about art and how it relates to faith. If you’re looking for a systematic approach to the subject, however, you’ll want to look elsewhere. If you’ve already started down your journey in exploring Christianity and the arts, however, you’re sure to find this book helpful. This is a collection of essays on religious art. The authors share their philosophy of the place religion has in art, and the place of art in religion. Illustrated with beautiful examples.

Ned Bustard did a great job with this book.

There are so many thoughtful authors from very different disciplines. There are a number of books trying to address the dynamics surrounding the arts and a Christian Aesthetic. This book is one of the best in the growing conversation. If you want to think seriously about the arts without giving facile answers this book should be in your library.

Thankful for Square Halo.

It's a wonderful collection of short essays on a wide range of music-related issues. Challenging on a number of levels. Full of practical applications as the authors share their personal and professional success and failures.

If you are a novice or a very accomplished musician, there is much to learn from these essays. There were two or three way above my skill level to appreciate, but that didn't take away from the rest. I found it encouraging and convicting at the same time. Well worth the read. I have given away a number of copies to friends who are musicians.
