The Authoritative Calvin and Hobbes : A Calvin and Hobbes Treasury ebook

by Bill Watterson

Often times the Calvin and Hobbes strip had a sarcastic edge or left you soured on humanity. Watterson clearly felt mankind needed improving and he used his strip to convey those feelings.

Often times the Calvin and Hobbes strip had a sarcastic edge or left you soured on humanity. However, kindness, the ray of light, and a general sort of sentimentality sometimes crept in and would make you sense that there was hope and a reason to fight on. Maybe I'm reading too much into all of this, but that's what the Calvin and Hobbes comic strip meant to m. .

Calvin and Hobbes appeared in newspapers from November 1985 until Watterson's retirement in 1995. I was very sad when Bill Watterson announced that he was retiring his cartoon strip featuring Calvin and Hobbs. I LOVED those two and the first thing I always turned to in the morning newspaper was the cartoon page so that I could see what they were doing that day. ADORABLE!!! I was equally impressed that Mr. Watterson could come up with so many true to life antics for Calvin to do and involve poor Hobbs. I marveled how just a single line on Calvin's face could change his expression completely!

I have to break up my review into 3 categories to cater to different kinds of potential buyers:

Rating of the collection (for those who are not familiar with Calvin and Hobbes): 5 stars
Calvin and Hobbes is by far my favorite comic, and it's blend of social commentary and humor is unique. Not a week goes by in my life where I don't recall a particular line from one of the strips and its probably fair to say that I have been significantly influenced by the comics in the 16 years I've been reading (and re-reading) them.

Rating of this specific collection among other Calvin and Hobbes books: 4 stars
Being the second book of the series which completes the Calvin and Hobbes collection, Bill Waterson has settled on some of the basic traits of each character and quality of the humor and the drawings is an improvement over the previous book (The Essential Calvin and Hobbes) though not up to the level of The Indispensable Calvin and Hobbes. Calvin's dad gets more involved (his love for the outdoors, his performances in Calvin's "polls") and Rosalyn has a few appearances.

Rating of the Kindle version: 4 stars
I am quite impressed with the Kindle version (which I read on an Android tablet) and like that the strips are designed to be viewed in landscape mode. This has resulted in two weekday strips fitting on one "page" of the digital edition (as opposed to 3 per page in the paper books) and it makes them very easy to read (the option to resize does not seem to be available). The one feature I would like is to have a way to search the strips for a particular quote, though it probably makes sense to have one to search across the entire collection. Note that there are a few unofficial tools which accomplish this, but they have their limitations.

I love Calvin and Hobbes, but I'm disappointed in this digital edition. _Homicidal Psycho Jungle Cat_, _Attack of the Deranged Mutant Killer Monster Snow Goons_, and _The Days Are Just Packed_ had the wonderful ability to "zoom in" on the pages to enjoy the wonderful details of one of the best comics ever created. This digital edition of _The Authoritative Calvin and Hobbes_ doesn't support that feature and I really missed it. I'm using and older Kindle Fire HDX 7" and I missed being able to zoom in on all the lush little details, particularly on the wonderfully complex full-color Sunday edition strips. Also, as stated in my other five reviews, the ability to bookmark favorite panels for easy revisiting would be a big plus! Overall, it's still a delight and I'd recommend it to long-time fans as a "must-have" purchase, as well as those that are newer to Calvin and Hobbes. I've really enjoyed revising Calvin and Hobbes. :)

I can't review Calvin and Hobbes the way a non-biased person would. This is my favorite comic strip. Every book I buy will be an incredible journey back to the days where I could sit around for hours and read comics like these ones. If you buy one Calvin and Hobbes book, you will soon find out that it is not enough and there are many more books to be had! I highly recommend all of Watterson's collections to adults and their children. Some of the best moments come from reading through a journey with Spaceman Spiff, or a snowball fight with Suzie. Hobbes will always try to jump on Calvin and Dad will never understand Calvin. But that is the point. That's what makes these comics so timeless and classic.

What can you say about Calvin and Hobbes? The books are awesome. This treasury includes strips from 'Yukon ho!' And 'Weirdos from Another Planet'. I bought three treasuries for my son when he turned 9 last year and over the past year he has almost worn out all three. He loves them and reads them every night in bed. I'm getting him three more books for Christmas. Some of the content is over his head as expected but he loves it anyway and it has really helped him as a struggling reader to find something he really loves to read!

Worth every penny you could possibly pay. Calvin and Hobbes is, without a doubt in my mind, the greatest comic strip I have ever read. I grew up on it, and it is so sentimental now that sometimes I tear up when reading it. My daughter has now started reading and she absolutely loves it. If you are even remotely interested in some reading that can make your sides hurt from laughter and in the very next frame have you contemplating societal complexities, buy and read Calvin and Hobbes.

I'm a HUGE Calvin and Hobbes fan. HUGE (tattoo and everything). I'm currently stationed in Korea and watched the movie "Dear Mr. Watterson". I realized I needed to get my C&H fix re-going. For the cost of having my wife send me a book I just ordered the digital copy and using it on my kindle App.

LOVE ME SOME Calvin & Hobbes!

Such a profound impact on my life as a child and growing up. Always brings a smile to my face. I can't wait to get home and start sharing with my boys. So much more pure than the commercialized garbage out there.

Thanks Bill!

Calvin and Hobbes is my favorite comic so I'm biased but I still think this is the best Calvin and Hobbes. It's fascinating to see some of the subject matter that would not fly in today's politically correct world - like when Calvin calls the library to check if they have books on making homemade bombs. Lots of grins and a few laugh out loud moments keep me coming back to read this over and over. Even better that I got this during a Kindle Deal for a tiny price.
Just buy this book. Not only will it impress your friends when they see it on your coffee table, it will enrich your life.
