This book is definitely not what you want to buy.
15/16 ths of the manual are dedicated to boring and lackluster 8ve slappings that are extremely uncool, not groovey and devoid of any creativity. -a total bore :-(
All examples are quantized within cold, hard and constrained digital 16th note grids. - NO SWING whatsoever!
Marcus Miller, nor Victor W. or Flea would approve of this manual. The end chapter contains so called "grooves" that would make your grandma fall asleep.... -forever. (repeated 7 to root and 4 to 5 hammer-ons / pull-offs are dull)
There seems to be a major void in publication regarding slap bass, which is why this fossil keeps appearing on every music store's shelf.
Check out Ed Friedland's DVD, it is so much more fun and educational.

Arrived quickly. Great book to read and learn from.

I'm surprised by the extremely negative reviews of this book; I felt I had to post a review to defend it.

When I was a fairly new player (2-3 years experience) I picked up this book and found it very useful. I've been playing for 17 years now and still recall many of the grooves.

The review by 'PH' is completely misconceived - this book has not one slapped note in it - it is a book on finger style funk. 'Funk Bass' by Jon Liebman is his slap bass tutor.

The section that notates the Major scale in various keys, does so, with tab, across two octaves. This is useful for expanding your fretboard knowledge, fingering and dexterity.

Chapter 4: 'Style Elements' is useful if you're not familiar with the techniques of hammer-ons, pull-offs, slides, shakes and trills. Even if you are familiar, it's always good to run over the basics. There's no CD accompaniment for that section, so some reading ability will help you here.

Chapter 5: Establishing a Groove. I found the this section interesting and the pieces fun to play. Liebman explores different keys and modes to create a good grounding in the funk fusion style. The 'Discography' section gives some insight into his influences for the book and allows the reader, if they chose, to take their understanding further and delve deeper into the style.

Today, I sat down with this book ready to give it a good read.

I read the first few pages (up to page 14) which is just about bass history, how to hold a bass, how you should use a metronome, blah blah blah... Then pages 15 to 63 are pages and pages of FILLER. All these pages contain are fingering exercises and an assortment of scales which are written in such a way that they take up as many pages as possible.. Literally, the funk/fusion exercises start at page 63..

Then, after the 50 ish pages of filler, you have 2 measly chapters left: grove, and soloing. That is of course, if you even want to read this book any more! (.. I didn't)

I feel completely ripped off! I mean, I completely understand that knowing your scales and keys is important... which is why I bought a music theory book to EXPLAIN it to me.. rather than buying a book which says "This is the E major scale", "This is the E major scale arpeggio", "This is the E major scale played with quavers rather than semiquavers!".

Seriously, I'm so disappointed with this book that I'm actually angry about it.

Ok, i started bass and i got this book, it is not worth buying! under any circumstances! it walks you though laim exercises, and has about 5 pages on the same scale (major) just in different keys! this is a very very poor book!
