As a founding member of The Grateful Dead, Jerry Garcia became famous for his work as a key creative force in this band. Known for free flowing jam sessions, psychedelic drug use, and a loyal fan base, The Grateful Dead combined a variety of genres, including blues, folk and country rock to create new and different sounds than those used by other popular bands at the time, including The Rolling Stones and The Beatles. Garcia contributed significantly to an era in American music that was influenced by social changes, war, and political strife. Yet Garcia's creative genius expanded beyond the fame that came as lead guitarist and vocalist for the Dead. From the time he was a young boy learning to play the piano in the Excelsior district of San Francisco, Garcia explored various genres and forms of music and visual art. I guess it's okay if you want some "reader's digest" kind of info on Jerry. If you are seriously interested in his life, look elsewhere. All this is is a rehashing of other books that are better. Her "research" is all from other books about Jerry and the Dead. It's all rehashed and repeated information. Kind of like kids in school doing "research" by copying the topic from an encyclopedia.

The section and chapter titles drive me crazy. They are all lyrics from the Dead's music. Cute, except that they have nothing to do with the section's topic! I would swear they were just chosen at random. If she thinks the titles are related to the content, I'd sure like to know in what way.

Quite a boring book over all. But I was feeling generous today so I'm giving it three stars instead of two.

Update: after finishing the book finally (it was so boring it took a while), I would have knocked one of those stars off and given it two stars. Amazon doesn't allow editing of the number of stars though.

From both an educator's standpoint and a Deadhead, I personally found this book very informative and appropriate for young adults. "Greenwood Press provides high-quality, authoritative reference books in all subject areas taught in middle schools, high schools" ([...]) This publishing company does not target older adults looking for a new twist on Jerry's life or a Grateful Dead revelation. Therefore when reading this biography, it is especially important to consider the audience. This biography is written for young adults. The vocabulary presented is student friendly and accessible to many different types of readers at different levels. All told, I think it is an excellent overview and introduction of Jerry's life, and it is a FABULOUS resource for young adults or anyone that wants to begin their own long strange trip with Jerry and friends.
