I had hoped that this would be a good primer for a novice interested in knowing how amps work and learning about the technical lineage of guitar amps. It's not. It's more of a book for fans of tube amps, who want to know more- some information is practical, some is simply esoteric.

There are three sections to the volume: printed schematics, a CD with 800 more schematics and, then, what might better be considered as the book.

About half the book is an alphabetical run down of the largest and most important amp makers in the history of guitar amps. It's broken out by manufacturer and gives some detailed analysis of the evolution of their most popular amps. It's not particularly consistent, from manufacturer to manufacturer, in what kinds of information it deems important to mention. It's sort of like sitting around with a knowledgeable, old uncle who talks amps- interesting, but a little all over the place. I'd have far preferred if the section was chronological and covered the technical lineage of amps.

The other half of the book are a series of articles taken from guitar magazines or drafted originally for this book. The articles cover everything from general safety warnings when working on an amp, to some discussions about particulars of certain tubes to amp mods, etc. Some articles are quite detailed, most are not. Like the previous section, it's patchy in its depth and breadth of information. Current fans of tube amps that are looking to learn more tips and tricks may find the 2nd half of the book helpful, but they may also find all that info on the web, as they need it.

I had hoped that the book would walk a novice reader through some of the simpler schematics. It doesn't.

This book is by, and for, musicians that like tube amps. Apsen Pittman doesn't just love the equipment, he went into a successful business building amps and as a tube supplier which naturally gets lots of air time here. Expect for a few exceptions, Groove Tube imports, tests, rates and marks G.T. on units you can get from other suppliers at a lower cost. But the guy does know what he's talking about from a non engineering standpoint which is fine for a guy like me with basic electronics understanding. The GT promotion gets annoying at times but if you can get past it, it's a good book. It's not real technical, it's not a DIY guide. That said Pittman included hundreds of schematics, for some reason. Unless you can read them there's not much point unless you have an oldie your tech can't find a schematic for and need some work done on it. There's lots of great pictures of vintage gear to drool over and short rundowns and histories on amps and builders past and present. There's good, every day common sense info that can help a lot if you are shopping for a tube amp. Along with Guitar Amplifier Handbook by Dave Hunter it will help making a decision twords choosing an amplifier for sure but it may make you want to break the bank and buy a collector's item.

Good reference book for explaining tubes, and how tube amps work, plus it covers lots of tubes amps that are available. However, it's true, this book is truly a commercial for GroveTubes. Duh, the book is availible from GTs website. With that being said, at least you know what to expect. If your a GT fanboy, then this book is REALLY for you! Not hard to not like GTs tubes though, after all, they provide you more info about their tubes and do more QC & QA than any other tube manufacture. Get this book! Or save some money and visit their website instead.

My husband told me the subject/author that he wanted and I ordered this. He was thrilled when it arrived - he paged through the big, sturdy book, liked the schematics and then saw there were even DVDs. This book might not be a great gift for everyone, but my husband is a HAMM, plus repairs old amplifiers, etc. and he is thrilled with this deluxe revised edition.

Amazingly, I have bought stuff from Aspen Pittman now, and used it in my own amps. The best part of this book is the CD ROM of schematics. Okay they are on the web now, but, sometimes the internet goes down, and its a decent assortment. He touches on a lot of amp makers, and glosses over their history, and their better amps.

I thought I was buying an engineering-oriented manual.
This is more like if your science & history museum made a documentary book about tube amplifiers.
The information is fascinating and much of it is from industry insiders you might be a fan of if you follow tube amplifier engineering.
