I got this book a couple years ago at least, and didn't love it at first. As one person said, it's kind of boring. You wouldn't probably play these riffs on stage, at least not as the main substance of most songs, but that isn't the point. Aside: the riffs do come from actual songs, and each one has a reference to the song it came from. Most are obscure blues numbers from a bygone time. Anyway, learning these riffs is meant to be an exercise. The construction varies greatly, as do the chord constructions, fingerings, timings, etc. They will force you to do things with your fret hand that you wouldn't figure out on your own, at least not for a very long time. Learn one, practice it, add another, go back to the first, etc. It has taken me quite a while to get halfway through the book this way, but I'm training my brain and my hands to pull these chords and arpeggios out when the time comes. Now today I just started actually taking the time to analyze the material on another level. For example, on page 12 there is an A6 chord (riffs are shown in chord, staff, and tab notation) that slides down 2 frets and becomes an A9 chord. So I spent some time delving into the theory of why the A6 lowered 1 step (G6) is also an A9. I'm also spending some time considering how the myriad partial voicings in this book are derived. So the point is, you can take this book at face value and learn something. You can learn how to play 25 riffs that work over established blues chord progressions and leave it at that. But if you choose to really get your money's worth, that's just the tip of the iceberg. By the time I've learned this book forwards and backwards I should have a very in-depth knowledge of chords, voicings, theory, as well as general blues playing and what options I have at a given point in a given progression. Rubin didn't have to write it this way, but he did, so kudos to him.

This is a great book, however it is too short. I have a great amount of fun playing the riffs and there are some very good ones in here, Look at #5, #9, & #21.

Great examples of different methods to bring out blues expressions, Examples in different keys helps to ad to one's musical vocabulary.

If you're a plodder like me, a serious study of this book will give you a better understanding of your fretboard by learning 25 blues riffs. Some are similar and you could add your own, but I can play stuff now that I couldn't before.

Fun to use!

Get one with a cd or it's useless unless you're great with timing.

This is a great product. Tired of your guitar not performing? May it's tired of its owner. You need to come out of the cave of the uncreative and explore what this can do for you emotionally and artistically.
It's a very simple book to follow, but my husband wished there were pictures illustrating where to place fingers, for samples. He's not so good at reading music yet but is learning & this book is helping him along, anyway! He likes it!
