I n 1971, Whitney Balliett prefaced his fifth book on jazz ("Ecstasy at the Onion") with a guess: "This collection . will, I suppose, be my last book on the subject. I have been writing about the music since 1947, a more than ample time to say what has to be said. But it was not to be, and thank God. Balliett writes a pleasant, loose-jointed prose and wholly endorses Norvo's wistful reminder that ""the main thing is that jazz should be fu.
