I n 1971, Whitney Balliett prefaced his fifth book on jazz ("Ecstasy at the Onion") with a guess: "This collection . will, I suppose, be my last book on the subject. I have been writing about the music since 1947, a more than ample time to say what has to be said. But it was not to be, and thank God. Born in Manhattan and raised in Glen Cove, Long Island, Balliett attended Phillips Exeter Academy, where he learned to play drums in a band he summed up as "baggy Dixieland"; he played summer gigs at a Center Island yacht club.

Balliett writes a pleasant, loose-jointed prose and wholly endorses Norvo's wistful reminder that ""the main thing is that jazz should be fu. Jazz pieces which originally appeared in the New Yorker over the past five years. Balliett, who mourns the present ""dwindling, defenseless state"" of the art, has the knack for metaphorical precision - . the ""machine-tooled sublimity of the MJQ"" - and he is not unduly impressed by current crazes.
