To get the most from this book the reader should be competent in mathematics through algebra and trigonometry. Using math no more complicated than this the author manages to explain electronic music concepts that involve Bessel functions, Chebyshev polynomials and Fourier analysis.

This is the first book to develop both the theory and the practice of synthesizing musical sounds using computers. Each chapter starts with a theoretical description of one technique or problem area and ends with a series of working examples (over 100 in all), covering a wide range of applications. A unifying approach is taken throughout; chapter two, for example, treats both sampling and wavetable synthesis as special cases of one underlying technique. Although the theory is presented quantitatively, the mathematics used goes no further than trigonometry and complex numbers.

Conversely it sometimes does not fully represent the breadth of work in a given area. In such a technical book, it is difficult bring aesthetics into the discussion in a comfortable way. Aesthetic intent is of course implicit in the design of music signal processing algorithms, but it is rarely discussed at length. Instead there is a kind of aesthetics of engineering that tends to dominate. The aesthetics of the music is often affected by this.
