I have Chord Melody Standards (Dan Towey) by Hal Leonard-some tunes fall under the fingers pretty easily (eg. Girl from Ipanema), others not. I thought Stella was OK until I heard Dirk's version on YouTube (watch?v uqpQNkFxVAU)-easier to play, sounds way better, more like jazz guitar! Agree that you should learn chord theory, but it's nice to "borrow" ideas from others-gets me out of my E half-diminished in a two-fret box rut. Reply With Quote.

Tyler Is Not Here
The pieces in this terrible book, with a couple of exceptions, go straight into improvisation without establishing the melody first. As a result, a lot of this is just sophisticated noodling. One reviewer wrote that these pieces would "impress" his audience. On the contrary, I feel it is far better to engage and entertain your audience with music. Some of these arrangements are not very musical (melodically or rhythmically).

Additionally, many of the pieces severely alter the original rhythms of the tunes. For example, Luis Bonfa's bossa nova classic Manha d'Carnival (erroneously titled Black Orpheus in the book)is arranged as a flamenco "gypsy king" style piece that bears no resemblance to bossa nova in rhythm. Also, Satin Doll is arranged as a twangy texas two step. Novel, yes, but not at all jazz chord melody in the traditional sense. In the recording it is even played on a twangy telecaster.

Finally, if you are looking for traditional style chord melody jazz arrangements in the vein of the "old masters" of archtop guitar, this is not at all your book. The pieces are in all sorts of styles and the recording reinforces this variety, using classical, steel string acoustic and electric telecaster much more that the traditional jazz box. This book might be full of impressive runs and original ideas, but as a set of arrangements of traditional chord melody pieces, except for a couple of marginal exceptions, it does not fill the bill as well as expected.

To quote The Beatles/Chuck Berry, "I've got no kick against modern jazz, unless they try to play it too darn fast, and lose the beauty of the melody..."
and Duke Ellington, "It don't mean a thing, if it ain't got that swing. (Do Wah Do Wah. Do Wah Do Wah)."

Not happy with this book. The arrangements are not in the original keys so I will have to transpose them. I would not have purchased the book had I been able to review it online. That said, never heard a country stylized version of Satin Doll before so instead of one star I'm giving it three stars for creativity. My main complaint isn't with the quality of the music, just that you can't view inside the book like you can with so many others on Amazon. Not going to return it, just won't buy another book of music from Amazon unless I can see it first. However to the author Dan, you have skills!

The CD itself was worth the price.. Excellent arrangements and great pieces to learn!

I'm an intermediate jazz guitarist. I enjoyed this book quite a bit, as significant pieces of the arrangements are amenable to solo playing. I have to agree with the reviewer who was turned off by the extended improvisations and the arrangements: they border on the bizarre, and I doubt anyone would ever have the patience to play them out. If you can extract the measures that stick close to the melody, you might find this book entertaining, as the those parts are nice and full-sounding (given that the arrangements are highly idiosyncratic), which is not often the case with the many books that pass themselves off as teaching chord melodies.

These are high quality chord melodies of the original tunes with extended improvisation. Hearing the performances on the CD really helps. The arrangements are in both standard notation and tab. Excellent.

The highlights found in this book are numerous and noteworthy. The compositions are practical and flow easily without the need to alter them in any way. As this book has been described by others, the songs contained are worthy of public performance and are very fun to play! I can highly recommend this book to all levels of guitar players. I play professionally and was looking for some solo numbers to play while my singer takes breaks

This is a good book, but I had to adapt the tunes to the Jummy Bruno style of playing jazz! I use the melodies and add an

octive here and there to enhance a solo.
The arrangements in this book are cool because they cover a range
of feels for solo jazz guitar. Prior to the CD going missing,
my impression of Towey's playing on the CD was very good, with
some of the tunes being real smokers played with spanky
distortion as an important part of the sound (Satin Doll),
while others would be at home on the acoustic guitar (Black Orpheus).

Technically you need to be a pretty agile guitar player to handle
this stuff or be willing to really dig in and work at it. Either
way these are, in my opinion, performance-level solo guitar pieces
that avoid sounding like student pieces when played at tempo and
with sensitivity to phrasing and dynamics.

I consider this pro-level material - presumably drawn from Towey's
real repertoire, and not dumbed-down for students.
