Richard Schmid, Alla Prima. Bits of art history are nicely mixed in with the main story and so all in all this book is very complete. Everything I know about Painting – and More. This is a true classic. Although Schmid writes about painting ‘Alla Prima’ (wet-in-wet, in one go, without letting paint layers dry) the book is full (and I mean full!) of pearls of wisdom that apply to painting in general. This book is written by the painter James Gurney who is known for his Dinotopia books. His paintings are realistic and full of narrative. Creating a convincing painting requires more than just matching what one sees.

Our property is an oasis of all things visual. I have gotten into the habit of simply carrying my camera around as I explore it. Although I've mentioned our cave in other reviews, we simply have weird twisting trees and vines, huge boulders, fossils embedded in stones, waterfalls, and living visual things everywhere you look from deer to geckos to a little raccoon last night who couldn't be bothered by me hovering over him taking photos while he partook of the berry flavored deer food my husband had strewn about.

Because of this I'm expanding my usual acrylic art media into more photography and mixed media and things to simply bring the outdoors in

This is a great way to begin and the cover shot gives you a unique look into some ideas that can make an average photo whimsical. And the style of this artist is mostly that.

I say that because some of the works do come off a little bit rough. When whimsy is used they come off more professional, I do love the cover shot, for example. The Campbell's Soup can ala Warhol-ish, for example, is a can that was not centered (turned slightly more in one direction but not intentionally so there is more spacing on one side of the can) and the steady-hand work of coloring in the words just wasn't very steady in that and a few other examples that held intricate items that needed to be traced with the paint were rough.

But this is minor to me considering the wealth of examples within the pages. There are some that don't appear as professionally crafted but they don't detract for me due to all the others that are so well done. And in all honesty I sometimes find that when a book shows you some things that aren't done quite as easily, you as an artist can pick your battles before you even begin working with a new media.

For example, there is also a baseball photo painted over and the main subject (players) is done very well but the numbers in the background are exceptionally rough and unsteady and primitive....we know our hands, typically, as artists...this may help one compose and choose what they want to work on based upon that. If you aren't yet at a place to be able to do realism in images that have fonts, simply begin with the photos that don't, and work upward as skill improves, if it does. To me this helps illustrate that fact, making it a good thing.

So while these did jump out on the page to me, I don't find they have to be a negative. They can be a learning tool and the entire book is truly a learning tool. The instructions are very well laid out for the beginner or the artist looking to expand their craft. The ideas are great...for example, there are some ballerina pictures that look almost as though they are done in pastels due to the technique and they are quite nice, while others are sharp and the subjects vary considerably.Yeah, some skills aren't quite mastered yet as a painter (the butterfly and flower I could not tell was a butterfly due to blending in with the background) but these are limited and most examples are perfect.

The main thing is that due to the variety of styles and examples, you can find how paint appears on the photos and choose what you want your works to achieve. You see things that look harder or might be more difficult to master, and you see things that look like a painting in the style of realism rather than a painted photo...there is a bit of everything but the instructions will lead you through the journey of learning to work well with photo paints and other techniques of photo painting in order to utilize the techniques within your own works.

I found it, as a whole, a valuable book to my collection.

very thorough explanations of techniques.

This book shows what can be done with photo painting. It has supply lists and describes what is done. What I like about this book is the artwork. It takes photo painting beyond the ordinary. The painted photos in this book look like paintings. This book, although not the best for just starting out photo painting, would be a great addition to a more basic photo painting book. I know I will spend a lot of time looking through this book.

Am anxious tp try some B&W photos especially some photos of some of my "old" ones from years gone by
I like this book and found the photopainting just another approach to the handcoloring of photos. The author definately got some interesting results and wonderful photos using this technique. I am just at the beginning of my handcoloring adventure but enjoyed this book for the artistic value and having yet another avenue to explore in handcoloring.
