I was most excited to read a biography about such a film legend. I just finished this book and was completely disappointed. I am wondering if Mr Eliot is even a Jimmy Stewart fan or just wanted to make a buck? As others have mentioned, there is little more than surface information on Jimmy Stewart.

This being said, I approached Marc Eliot's biography with great excitement and hope-and was left with my feelings drastically dashed to bits upon the floor. Eliot's biography of Grant is very narrow-minded, gossipy, and tediously obsessed with the details of Grant's supposed bisexuality. Although the actor's sexual orientation is of little interest to a fan of the movie star and Hollywood legends in As a long-time Cary Grant fan, I am perhaps biased to enjoy anything related to the actor.

“Everybody wants to be Cary Grant. Even I want to be Cary Grant.” —Cary GrantHe is Hollywood’s most fascinating and timeless star. Although he came to personify the debonair American, Cary Grant was born Archibald Leach on January 18, 1904, in the seaport village of Bristol, England. Combining the captivating beauty of silent-screen legend Rudolph Valentino with the masculine irresistibility of Clark Gable, Grant emerged as Hollywood’s quintessential leading man. Today, “the man from dream city,” as critic Pauline Kael once described him, remains forever young, an icon of quick wit, romantic charm, and urbane sophistication, the epitome of male physical perfection. Yet beneath this idealized movie image was a conflicted man struggling to balance fame with a desire for an intensely private life separate from the “Cary Grant” persona celebrated by directors and movie studios. Exploring Grant’s troubled childhood, ambiguous sexuality, and lifelong insecurities as well as the magical amalgam of characteristics that allowed him to remain Hollywood’s favorite romantic lead for more than thirty-five years, Cary Grant is the definitive examination of every aspect of Grant’s professional and private life, and the first to reveal the man behind the movie star.Working with the most talented directors of his time, Grant starred in an astonishing seventy-two films, ranging from his groundbreaking comedic roles in such classics as Bringing Up Baby (Howard Hawks) and The Philadelphia Story (George Cukor) to the darker, unforgettable characters of Alfred Hitchcock’s Suspicion and Notorious, culminating in the consummate sophisticates of An Affair to Remember (Leo McCarey), North by Northwest (Hitchcock), and Charade (Stanley Donen). The camera loved Grant, and his magnetism helped illuminate his leading ladies, some of the most glamorous women ever to grace the silver screen: Mae West, Irene Dunne, Katharine Hepburn, Ingrid Bergman, Grace Kelly, and Sophia Loren, among others. Yet, because of his pioneering role as an independent player, Grant was repeatedly denied the Oscar he coveted—a snub from the Academy that would last until 1970, when he graciously accepted a special lifetime achievement award.Grant’s sparkling image on-screen hid a tumultuous personal life that he tried desperately to keep out of the public eye, including his controversial eleven-year relationship with Randolph Scott, five marriages, and numerous affairs.Rigorously researched and elegantly written, Cary Grant: A Biography is a complete, nuanced portrait of the greatest Hollywood star in cinema history.

Marc Elliot writes excellent biographies. Having read a few, the Grant bio sheds light on a very popular actor. You might not like the character
Grant developed but he was very entertaining on the screen.

I love Cary Grant. This is a fun read, gossipy but not unfriendly. Not many photos in the Kindle version. It was first published in 2004.

Interesting background material on film industry in 1940's-70's as well as some intriguing insights into the person who became Cary Grant. I didn't find it compelling reading, finished it mainly because it was book of the month for my local book clip.

This book was well researched and written. Many of the movies and events of Mr. Cary Grant's life were presented in more detail than most of us normal fans have ever experienced. And that is my one caution about the book - if you have loved and hold dear the Cary Grant mystique and "image" some of us have carried with us our entire lives, you may want to pass on this book. Why - well, it does reveal negatives about Mr. Grant's personality and include his negative evaluation and attitudes regarding some of the movies that otherwise have historically been highly regarded. On the other hand, there are some omissions. For example, while the autobiography of Ginger Rogers clearly discusses a relationship with Mr. Grant - but it is not mentioned in this book. And, while some of us have cherished "An Affair to Remember" and "Charade," there is little discussion of the "making of" and Mr. Grant's attitudes toward these classics - a disappointment for this reader. But if you want clearly written detail about the most of the early, middle, and late life of Cary Grant, this is the book for you.
I definitely recommend this biography!! Cary Grant has always appealed to me, by way of his quiet class and awesome acting ability! No one likes to know there are "dark sides" to their heroes, however, I am now aware of his struggles, bad marriages and other gossip as pertains to Him. You may feel shock and astonishment, but that will not make you love him less. In fact, you begin to understand and know Him better, love him more, and be reminded that we are not to judge one another. I found this biography to be a wonderful insight into who I consider the most charming, classy, loving actor of all time!
