If I had all of the parts in hand I'd send to HDPS tomorrow. I'm hamstrung by the unavailability of black USC's. Between waiting for the next load of USC's to get to dealers and waiting for a form 1 sign off it could be a few months before I'm ready to send to HDPS. As we've seen with T&E stuff happens. That's why I want a plan B. Based on the responses to this thread I can only assume that HDPS is the only game in town right now and I'm plan B.

For the soldiers of the First World War fighting was an exceptional circumstance, rather than the norm. For many, life consisted of toiling to keep those at the front supplied. But the frontline troops themselves were rotated to ensure that time spent facing the enemy was balanced by periods of rest and, occasionally, home-leave. This encouraged war-weariness and desertion. Poor leave arrangements also featured among the grievances of mutinying French soldiers in 1917. When armies were hard-pressed by their enemy – as was the case in the German army in the autumn of 1918 – repeated exposure to the stress of combat could lead to a collapse of morale.

This is the non-fictional, daily diary of a young man who volunteered to serve in the U.S. National Guard and was sent to Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom II. Each journal entry starts with the date in which the events took place, and the book is divided into thirteen chapters, each representing a month that the author spent in Iraq from February 2004 to February 2005. In this journal, Sergeant Bernskoetter recounts daily life at Log Base Seitz, a U.S. outpost on the outskirts of Abu Ghraib that was completely surrounded by hostile Iraqi insurgents during his tour of duty. Sergeant Bernskoetter describes his daily experiences, ranging from the mundane (e.g. waiting in line to do his laundry) to the terrifying (e.g. crawling out of harms way during a mortar attack), with intelligence and a healthy sense of wit, humor, and irony. I enjoyed this book and I highly recommend it.

I bought this book as a present for my soldier and she absolutely loves the reading. The reason for my less than perfect review has to do with the printing of the book itself. I picked it up a few days ago and noticed that the pages on the right side of the book are messed up. (See picture) . The first word on each line is missing the guts of the word... for example: finished shows "F ISHED." The person who I bought the book for does not want to pursue any replacement but I just find it frustrating that 200 pages out of a 400 page book are incomplete... someone should have caught it during print.

I picked this up to read on a month long travel trip. I ended up reading it in one sitting! Consequently, Im very glad I had also purchased a few other titles on the same topic. I really good read, disturbing and terrifying at times with a great deal of insight, but a great read.

Not too happy with the author. We were all there together and I feel some of the facts are off. BUT its a good way others to understand what a days like in Iraq.

I spent a year at Log Base Sietz myself, Shane's book brought back many memories I'd forgotten about the war and the Base. All who served there or elsewhere in Iraq should be honored by his accurate and honest account of day to day life.

Shane delivers an excellent account of a soldier's daily life in the War in IRAQ. Great humor mixed in with the realities and emotions of being a soldier in the daily grind. From getting there from Ft. Riley, Kansas to coming home to the relatives and friends. This is the type of story the news media usually never delivers. FIVE STARS!

Not to say that it was a trip to the Circus, but he keeps it on the light side and never loses his sense of humor, even during mortar attacks. Shares with you the sadness of losing another soldier, you can feel it. It will make you laugh and it will make you cry. Well worth the read. Had friends and an Ex, in theater, good to really know what life was like. Glad they too returned safely.
I did not know what to expect when I ordered this book but wanted it just because I know the author personally. It is a very detailed day to day account of what he and his unit had to endure. The journalistic way it is written makes you feel like you are right there with them living through the hell they had to live through.

I am only a couple of months into his life in Iraq and can't wait to pick the book back up to see what happens next. I know that it had to be hard for his parents to hear how close to death he was every day but at least they knew what was going on. It is a lot harder not knowing.

An aquaintance from his childhood.
