In 1928, Rollins’s father fell ill and the 12-year-old boy accepted additional responsibilities on the family farm. He worked hard to help his mother provide for the family. As a child, he had an entrepreneurial spirit and tried his hand at an early age selling door to door with things such as bedspreads. In the aftermath of the Great Depression, he left the family farm in Ringgold and moved to Philadelphia. Rollins died in his office suite at the Rollins Building in Wilmington, Delaware.

I met John Rollins on several occasions in Wilmington back in the mid 1970's. He was a big, jovial man and a pleasure to be around. At the time I worked as a sales guy for a corporate jet management company in PHL. After several attempts to do business with him, one afternoon he called and invited me to join him on a test flight of a Jetstar he was thinking of buying. He treated me with professional and personal respect and made me feel very special that day. I thought I knew his background, but there was so much this booked filled in. For example I never knew he was so influential of the black community through his radio stations. I knew he loved Rose Hall and flew to Jamacia frequently. But this book was the thread between so many bits I of information. I was so glad I read it.

OK this book arrived in good time. I was surprised when I leafed through it to see that some pages had underlining and did not expect that. The book other than this is as expected.

Perhaps I was expecting too much, but this book is a one-sided positive view of John Rollins, an important figure in Delaware history. I like the Rollins family but the gushing just got too much
