2 books of Muriel Engelman.

A former World War II army nurse shares her extraordinary life stories visualized from her earliest childhood memories over eighty years ago, to the present.Muriel Engelman begins her fascinating narrative by detailing her journey through childhood during the Great Depression and then transitioning into her structured life as a student nurse. Caring for polio patients in a city hospital she becomes skilled in dealing with difficult patients.Upon graduation she was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps and sailed with her hospital unit in late 1943 for England, serving there for six months. Her unit arrived in Normandy, France after D Day, followed the advancing army and eventually operated a 1,000 bed tent hospital in Liège, Belgium. Lighter off-duty moments balanced out the threat of capture and continuous buzz bombs, all while caring for wounded American soldiers. This is all described in excerpts from actual letters penned to her family often by the dim light of a kerosene lantern or flashlight, knowing as she wrote that survival was not a guaranteed possibility.Engelman provides vivid descriptions of the people, settings and memories in a timeless style that will transport anyone back to an era when the future of the world was uncertain, and the bravery of those who sacrificed everything to protect America was not forgotten.

As editor of KilroyWasHere.org I usually review books about WWII. I started Mission Accomplished expected one. It is and more. It is billed as a personal memoir. It is more an autobiography of a strong, accomplished, attractive woman. There are parts about WWII but from a woman’s viewpoint including feminine humor and concerns about clothes being feminine while buzz bombs fly overhead. Or in London 1944 during a blackout . . . worried about hair. I loved it!

We have lost as a culture because writers like Muriel waited too long to start writing — maybe because of a little distraction like WWII. Imagine the wonderful books we would have had if, instead of working long hours in a tent hospital 54 miles from Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge, she was writing her first books.

Her descriptions especially individuals are superb. By the time she finished telling us about Betty I was saddened later - enough spoilers. She had a lifetime of interesting people. I feel like I have grown up and old with her. A wonderful read!

This author knew my mother, who served with her. I was so happy to find this book and see through her eyes my mother's experiences of being a nurse in WWII.

An amazing and moving memoir by a young Jewish MASH nurse, detailing her service in WW2, including the fierce Ardennes campaign (Battle of the Bulge) - the German counter-attack in the freezing winter of 1944 and the final major European conflict of the war, as portrayed in the award-winning 'Bastogne' episode of Spielberg & Hanks' 'Band of Brothers'. Actually I read the book years ago when it was first published, but I didn't buy a copy at the time because I was given one by my mother who is mentioned in the book, having met Muriel as a child during the war and then commenced a lifelong transatlantic friendship with her for the next 75 years.

The author turned 96 last week but is still making public-speaking appearances to talk about her WWII experiences - one of the very last of that incredible generation of heroes and heroines who can still do so. It is spellbinding stuff to listen to - and she does it without notes or any apparent preparation! These anecdotes and observations illuminate the experiences of a fascinating life. Many of the incidents and people described are so humorous that I laughed out loud and reread several chapters. The author has a terrific writing style. There are other chapters that are not humorous, but are written with such feeling and emotion that the reader can easily empathize with the people being described. For example, there is a chapter about Mrs. Engelman's mother-in-law whose transit through Alzheimer's is sensitively narrated.

The highlight and central focus of the book are the author's experiences as a nurse during World War II, detailing her description of the Battle of the Bulge. Mrs. Engelman's effective use of figurative language enables the reader to hear the daily buzz bombs as they fly over the tent hospital, and one can easily visualize the general conditions as these dedicated nurses care for the wounded soldiers. Her actual letters home are poignant, evoking tears both of sadness and laughter as she describes treating the wounded while working under frightening conditions. On the lighter side, the depictions of women's military uniforms, - I never realized the helmet had so many uses besides protection - meals, and daily adventures, especially during any free time are often humorous.

For those who lived during this period, it is a significant trip down memory lane. For the younger generation, this book provides a vivid insight into a bygone time. This is a thoroughly engaging book and is universal in its appeal.
