As a fan of Tobias Wolff and his work, "This Boy's Life" who writes about his boyhood struggles with his single mother, I was equally curious and impressed by brother Geoffrey Wolff writing of his boyhood struggles with his dad. It definitely gives the reader a comprehensive view of how this family survived being torn apart by divorce and loyalties.

According to Geoffrey Wolff, ""my father was a bullshit artist"" and ultimately a madman-but also a charismatic free spirit, a discriminating jazz-lover, and something of a genius. According to a Wolff cousin, ""He was a gonif, a schnorrer. The younger Wolff has done a fine, bewildered, ironic job of reconstructing his father's chutzpah-tic early years.

Book was so dried out it was difficult to handle.

Excellent book. Fascinating story about how a son dealt with flawed parents. His father's escapades are great fun, and he got away with things that you could probably not get away with today. However, it did all catch up with him. Not your usual memoir.

Amazon had this mistakenly listed as a 1955 book, but it was first published in 1979. (They may have repaired this by the time you read this.) Duke Wolff had two sons, Geoffrey and Tobias, and both became fine writers and scholars. Their mother had impeccable credentials, but not as good as the phony ones Duke claimed. The marriage soon split up, each parent taking a son, and they embarked upon wild and divergent adventures. Tobias's dismal, wayward youth, recounted in 'This Boy's Life,' is amazing and heartrending enough, but Geoffrey's tale of himself and his father is at least as interesting, and it's told with broader scope and more objectivity. Gradually he learns that nothing his father ever told his was true. In the end, though, old Duke was more amazing than any of the fakeries he made up about himself.
