The other side of the rainbow: With Judy Garland on the dawn patrol ebook
by Mel Tormé
In this book the singer composer mel torment had a front row seat in telling the story of what makes Judy garland tick. It certainly sounds like Mr. Torme and others went through a huge ordeal, doing their best, but up against the PTB and Ms. Garland herself
In this book the singer composer mel torment had a front row seat in telling the story of what makes Judy garland tick. This is a man who has no history so to speak with Ms. Garland but is a man who was asked to work along side of her; make her Tv show and her shine as bright as possible and got way more than contracted. Garland herself. To be fair, the show was on the air against a tv juggernaut and I think it went on for as long as it could have, longer than a similar show could be made today.

Known as The Dawn Patrol, Torme and others would leave their beds and rush to Garland's Brentwood home to offer whatever assistance they could. Torme focuses almost exclusively on Garland's short lived television variety show 'The Judy Garland Show'. If you've never seen footage of it online (. Youtube) it's a fascinating view of Garland as a performer, under tremendous pressure (and medication) to do well as her movie career had ultimately dried up at this point.
I adore Judy Garland. I also appreciate Mel Torme's singing. She is one of the greatest entertainers of the 20th Century. That said, this book is a journal of what a nightmare it can be like dealing with what the French correctly call a "sacred monster". Torme doesn't tarnish Judy's legacy. Here he harshly but honestly illuminates a dark corner of her life. By this time of her life, she was somewhat impossible to work with: like an injured creature, wounding those around her. This isn't an easy read for many Garland fans, I know
