This book is about a relationship between a father and a son, with some hiking thrown in. I liked the book a lot more than I liked Paul Hemphill. His writing is witty and uninhibited, with many laugh out loud moments but I couldn’t get around what a jerk Hemphill is/was. Hemphill is ruled by his many addictions, name drops up a storm to try and impress whoever he can and to a degree, he’s abusive towards his son who he refers to as “boy” throughout the book.

Paul Hemphill deals with guilt over his having left his son at a tender age and so he thinks taking a hike and attempting to spend some quality time with David will be a bridge building experience. Serious hiking is not a time to spend on renewing and repairing one’s relationship with anyone. Too many things get in the way, for instance extreme fatigue, hunger, thirst, hypothermia, and the like. And I know, as a lot of other people do, that having a successful relationship with a using addict is impossible.

There does seem to be some healing towards the end of the book though and both father and son appear to have come to some understandings but because I bought the book for the hiking aspect, I have to say I was disappointed.

This book is about a father and son getting to know one another while hiking the Appalachian Trail. I read this book when I was eighteen and ended up getting me hooked on the AT. I started reading all i could find on the Appalachian Trail. This book is a fast read and i recommend it for teen and adults alike.
