It is, so far as I know, unprecedented that a poet of . Auden's stature would single out a mountaineering book for special praise. But when David Roberts published his second book Auden wrote: "David Roberts has already written one excellent book, The Mountain of My Fear; Deborah, in my opinion is even finer. Never, before or since," Jon Krakauer points out, "has an author of climbing books been taken so seriously.

They tell their story in alternating and nicely dovetailed this-is-how-it-was first-person pieces, with help from Phil Patton, who wrote Open Road and Razzle Dazzle. More than half the book focuses on the several years before the flight, which Jeana and Dick, with a growing legion of professional and volunteer helpers, spent designing, building, testing and testing again (dangerously) their ultra-light, catamaran-shaped craft with its tiny "horizontal telephone booth" cockpit.

The Rutan Model 76 Voyager was the first aircraft to fly around the world without stopping or refueling. It was piloted by Dick Rutan and Jeana Yeager. The flight took off from Edwards Air Force Base's 15,000 foot (4,600 m) runway in the Mojave. The flight took off from Edwards Air Force Base's 15,000 foot (4,600 m) runway in the Mojave Desert on December 14, 1986, and ended 9 days, 3 minutes and 44 seconds later on December 23, setting a flight endurance record

The pilots who designed and flew the "Voyager" around the world tell of the cramped quarters, constant noise, turbulent trip, and other struggles they faced in realizing the dream of their historic flight

This is a terrific book. This gives you a very good idea of what a terrifying airplane this was to fly. This probably shouldn't have happened, but Dick and the team pulled it off. Accurately portrays Burt, also. Dick is a pleasure to talk to, now. He has come out with another version, shorter, audio book, and that is illuminating, also. Hearing him in person is even better- which prompted me to buy this book. This is a true aviation horror story that turned out well. Very interesting. Stop by the Voyager Café if you're ever near the Mojave airport, also, if you can. The book does not convey how desolate and windswept and "different" that place is. It's like the moon. This is a good story about some very interesting people and a nightmare of an airplane.

An incredible story about an incredible project done on a shoe string budget.
A story about where there is a will, there is a way.

This book is a good 'read' and has kept me engaged and interested, although as I write this review I am not quite finished with the book. I appreciate that the authors have taken the time to document and reflect on all aspects of what took place to make their historic flight happen. Still, as another reviewer noted, this is actually a poorly written book. It should surprise no one that neither Rutan or Yeager are skilled authors, but in documenting such an important event you would expect for them to have worked with a skilled coauthor or editor. No editor is credited, and the book lists Phil Patton as coauthor, but it is unclear what value he brought to the effort.

The book is mostly written in a first person narrative, as if the person told their story into a tape recorder and somebody transcribed for them. Perhaps that is what DID happen, and perhaps that is the service rendered by Patton. The problem is that virtually every paragraph is by a different person than the preceding paragraph, but they don't bother to tell you who is 'speaking', and this gets confusing and distracting. In order to make sense of the narrative, the reader must constantly be trying to deduce whose perspective is doing the narration. Just prefacing each paragraph with 'Dick' or 'Jeana' would have helped a lot.

First it was a very historic event but the best part was that these were just ordinary people with a big idea that was way over their heads. But they found a way to get it done by hard work. And it's written with warts and all showing what a struggle it was both financially and technically. It shows that great things don't come easy and it's the people behind such great deeds that don't give up on their dreams but find a way. Both the planning, building of the plane, test flying a very unstable aircraft, and then the actual record attempt were hair raising. They were as lucky as they were bold. Looking back on the danger of the project, they were very brave, although at the time, they were just doing what they knew and trusting their own instincts. The book is very informative of the nuts and bolts of a monumental project. I couldn't put it down.
