I loved this book. It is well-researched, thought-provoking and is written from the heart. The 21st century has provided mankind with some amazing advancements and breakthroughs in science but we still have a great deal to learn about finding true meaning and purpose in our work and in our lives and this book will help you greatly with this aspect. As the instructor of a course related to this subject, I read everything out there on finding your "true vocation." I have found Nick Williams' approach to be the most comprehensive and heart-centered of all that are currently published. Nick approaches finding the work you were born to do as a task not separated from the rest of life, but rightly so, a question of "living" rather than "working." As his many practical exercises convey, our culture needs to change the way we think about work; the way we've confronted this problem in the past has not brought about joyful results. Nick's suggestions for self-discovery allow for the possibility of work being a joy rather than a job. If you choose one book on this subject, I would definitely go for this one.

Nick's passion for his subject certainly comes through in this book, but I cannot escape the feeling that it was written over quite a period of time. Initially his thinking starts out as practical and is based on what I'd call 'popular psychology', and most readers will readily understand and identify with the 'truths' of the earlier chapters. Increasingly Nick seems to grow in his own spiritual confidence, and taking great care not to upset the sensitivities of any specific religious doctrine his connection with the less spiritually inclined reader falters. Anecdotal support from many named friends does little to convince me of the truth of the experiences and a frequent tendency to delve into the etymology of words becomes a tad irritating. The exercises suggested by Nick certainly help crystalise the reader's thinking on particular topics, but could not dispel the ambiguity I felt about some of Nick's ideas. There is no doubt that this book is about the path of a very personal journey that Nick has been on. Whether or not one is able to join him there in total trust and faith will differ for each of us. But we can only be better in many ways for having stayed the course.

If you suspect that you haven't yet found your right livelihood, don't read this book...use it as a workbook. Nick Williams covers all the insidious barriers to making our work the joyful experience it was meant to be. I plan to recommend this book heartily to participants in my workshops, newsletter subscribers and strangers on airplanes. And while it may be best read slowly, every chapter will open new insights. Even though I believe I am doing my right livelihood, I am finding a new level of enthusiasm and confidence thanks to Nick Williams' guidance.

'The Work We Were Born To Do' offers some very helpful information for those seeking to discover or rediscover the type of work that should motivate and inspire. Williams is full of positive thinking and offers many practical and helpful exercises, first for unlearning the things that keep our vision limited and small. Then he teaches how to reprogram your thoughts so that you can follow your passion, whatever it may be. Some great examples, stories, and exercises are included.
I'd give the book 3.5 stars if I could. My complaint is that a lot of the theological thinking in the book is (to me) really far out in some cases and offensive in others. Christians reading this book should read with a close eye.
