The bestselling author of Catch! shares the innovation secrets that helped Boeing turn itself around from the brink of collapse

The Rudolph Factor tells the story of Boeing's spectacular turnaround through a discussion of principles and qualities that are transferable and replicable to any size or type of organization in any industry. Authors Cyndi Laurin and Craig Morningstar use the story of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer as an analogy to explore a corporate culture that managed to avoid disaster through progressive leadership; a highly participatory team-based culture; the development of an organizational constitution; and an alternative, aligned employee rewards structure. Using real-world lessons from Boeing's inspiring story, The Rudolph Factor shows companies how to nurture a culture centered around their "Rudolphs"–those out-of-the-box, creative employees who can serve as shining lights to lead organizations in accomplishing their goals. Applicable to anyone who runs a business of any size, this book shows readers how to find, nurture, and leverage the creativity of its employees to achieve a long-term competitive advantage.

What a great author!

The book was supposed to chronicle how Boeing experienced cultural turnaround through the experience they had with the C-17 project. Unfortunately, the authors actually forget to tell the story. In 165 pages, there aren't enough "how they did it at Boeing" insights to fill an average-length Fortune magazine article. Much of the book centers around the idea of empowering the natural leaders within the organization - - people they dub Rudolphs - - after Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. The authors are intent on pounding on this cutsie analogy until you get rather sick of hearing it. In terms of organizational change, there are several good conceptual ideas, but very little detail on implementation or keys to success. The biggest disappointment, however, is the almost total lack of information on the remarkable C-17 program, a project that likely led to a Baldrige Award for Boeing in 1998. Somebody still needs to tell the C-17 story.

a waste of my time. The book lacked credibility, and seemed unfocused. I don't recognize any "Rudolphs" and disagree with the overall thesis.

This book is Excellent in describing the culture change and challenges of a mega-military project and its transformation into one of the most success military projects in history. As the Rudolph Factor describes any organization's "diamonds in the rough," it also informs the reader of what it took to make the successful changes become a reality. I was part of this C-17 transformation story and each detail is accurate and true. The authors have done a great job of gathering the facts that made the C-17 Military Globemaster III story what it is today. It is the best military cargo plane in the world. It is an honor to be part of this great story as I have lived it.
