The Art of Time was recommended to me by a long-time business mentor .

The Art of Time was recommended to me by a long-time business mentor of mine who I respect dearly. Just recently I was in his office having a discussion about the progression of his new book. After touching on Servan-Schreiber’s developed theory of the art of time, he then goes into the specific things in our lives that have the great potential to waste away our time if not used properly.

If you have the power to travel anywhere in time . Wouldn’t you prefer to play God instead? Afterall, only God should have the power to control time. As the Master of Time, time itself is my servant.

If you have the power to travel anywhere in time, armed with your knowledge, what would you do? Could you prevent wars, natural disasters and the economic crisis? Do you really want to? Wouldn’t you prefer to play God instead? Afterall, only God should have the power to control time. This is the story of my life. It is not for the faint of heart. I never wish for this power, yet I was granted it, nonetheless. It is loyal to a fault, preventing death from claiming me. In effect, it forces me to wander all of time and space, for all of eternity. I wonder when, if ever I will be free from this curse and this gift!

Your time has never been more valuable

Your time has never been more valuable. Focus on the areas that matter most to you and that offer the best return on your energy investment. The right time and energy management techniques can improve your self-efficiency after the age of 50 – and help you to get more done in a typical week than you ever thought possible. It’s essential to sometimes pull back to a higher-altitude view of your life and instead of working in your day, you work on the day itself, to determine where, when, and how you’re expending your time and energy. Each of us has the same 168 hours in a week.

Opinion polls show that people complain more about a lack of time than a lack of money, greenery, or freedom. Could this be the evil of our era? Jean-Louis Servan-Schreiber wrote those words in his original 1984 edition of The Art of Time, but they are just as true in our new techno-congested millennium. Now fully revised and updated, with a new chapter on time in the 21st century, Servan-Schreiber's elegant treatise illuminates the causes of our frequent misuse of time and offers a key to unlocking the "why" behind people's busy schedules. His goal is to incite readers to rediscover their true needs and priorities and begin to live their time instead of simply spending it.

This is not your "run off the mill" time management book that tells you how to become more efficient by saving a few minutes a day or cutting out certain minor activities. This book is much more fundamental. Servan-Schreiber looks straight at our deficits when it comes to managing our time. Addressing the many culprits for our lack of time, his European perspective should be a great eye opener for anybody who is held hostage to the work ethic and education that places work life above everything else. He addresses issues like couple being too stressed for having sex anymore and how modern life is going against what defines us as human beings. The author makes you think about your priorities in life. This means the priorities of how you spend time. He also gives concrete advice on how to get some or your time back by re-setting priorities. This is a must-read for anybody facing time constraints in his or her life - basically for all of us.

Since time is more precious than gold, it's a fine skill to live in it, feel good about it, not let it push you, not be a slave to it, enjoy it, and utilize it for yourself, loved ones, and community. This guy figured out a lot about using time. I got great new ideas from him. Downright exciting to learn this stuff.

I bought this book 20 years ago and have read it many times. About a year ago I lent it to someone who, subsequently, misplaced it. So, I was compelled to buy a replacement. I will continue to reread this book always.

A bit old but still worthwhile

Gem of a book! The Secret of time management - "You have time for what you love, so you have to love everything that you do. You don't have time for everything, so you must choose wisely."
Tori Texer
This is a great book that approaches time management from a very thoughtful perspective. It doesn't go into minutiae like filing systems or how to order your day, but directs you to examine your use of time (life) so as to make better use of it and offers direction on how to master your time.

It is a relatively short book at 138 pages, but is dense with too many ideas for me to adequately summarize.

Parts of it reminded me David Allen's Getting Things Done. But, Servan-Schreiber spends much less time addressing methods of recording To-Dos and mainly points out the necessity of having memory aides.

On pg. 74 he says:
But a quite special place should be made for the clearing away of memory. Trying to remember everything is as ambitious and pointless as climbing five flights of stairs instead of taking the elevator--good physical exercise, but not necessarily good common sense when carrying grocery bags.
What we commit ourselves to holding in memory limits a part of our mental availability to the passive role of merely storing ideas; on the other hand, what we happen to forget produces frustrating disturbances in our temporal development.
Each of us has worked up a practical system of keeping memories (such as keeping a diary), but few that prove reliable enough for us to relax enough to then empty out the emotional or mental storage space in an attempt to convert it to more creative purposes.

I really like that this book was more general in nature than other time management books I have read. Most of them were very much pointed to the busy CEO or entrepreneur and left me wondering why the corporate titans cited as examples in the books would want to mess around with filing systems at all, when they should be able to hire a personal secretary to keep track of things for them much more efficiently.

I loved the first section. The words flowed and entranced me with the vision of time and it's real meaning. I developed a new appreciation for the meaning of time and how I view it. I was expecting a total development of that beginning thought. What followed was just dull and never really opened up any new directions or motivated a new outlook.
This small, concise book is insightful and gets to the heart of time and time management. It is better than any of the popular, larger books or programs on the subject.
