I honestly can say that I have never seen such great illustrations in some other poetry books that I have read. Even though the illustrations are all in black and white, the detail that Wormell put into each animal is spectacular.

I read ''Swan Song'' to my second-grade daughter one night, and she found it so unbearably sad that I immediately had to fetch her a couple of old friends like ''Fox in Socks'' and ''This Is My Hair. Presumably Barnard and Lewis think it worth the risk of a few fleeting bad dreams now for the sake of thwarting a permanent nightmare tomorrow, and they may well have a point.
