Meerkats are the type of animal that almost looks as if they are smiling at you. They are an African animal who lives on both the grassy savannas or the dry plains in the southern part of the continent. This animal will "play in the sun" and "rest in the shade." They almost look comical when they stand up straight to take a look around them to make sure no predators are lurking in the area. They stay together in "mobs" or groups to make sure they are safe. In this book you will learn about how they dig burrows, dig for food, what they eat, how they get water in such an arid habitat, why they have a babysitter and how they warn the mob of impending danger.

This is a popular book among the young, but confident reader, but can be read to the younger child. The text is in larger, easier to read print and the photographs are very appealing, especially the one with six standing meercats peering at the reader from the pages. This book is obviously geared toward a fun, successful reading experience. In the back of the book is a glossary, an index and additional recommended book and internet resources. This is a Fact Hound book that will "fetch the best sites" for the appropriate age group. This book has 125 words, is grade level one and is an early-intervention level sixteen.
