Belinda Downes is one of the world's most successful embroidery designers. Her books include Silent Night, Every Little Angel's Handbooks, and The Starlight Princess and Other Princess Stories. It may be hard to tell from the picture, but all of the illustrations in this book are actually very beautiful, very intricate embroidery work. It's unbelievable and very exquisite when you see it in person. What brilliant illustrations!! Cannot say enough!!

The illustrations are mesmerizing. Hand sewn sheer and cotton fabric fragments, embellished with simple emboidery stitches, create charming Christmas scenes.

This book contains twelve traditional Christmas songs with the piano music and an illustration about the song. I liked the fact that the songs are the originals and not tweaked like some modern artists see fit to do. It is nice that they include some almost-forgotten carols, such as "Once in Royal David's City" and "I Saw Three Ships." There are also more well-known carols, such as "Silent Night" and "Angels We Have Heard on High." You won't find more modern songs, such as "Frosty the Snowman" and "Jingle Bells," however, "Jingle Bells" was run into the ground years ago. More than one verse is printed for each song, mostly 3 verses. One thing I wish the author had included is the traditional tune for "Away in a Manger." The more recent rendition is included. I think it would have been good to at least print both versions or go with the latter one. Overall, though, it makes a good Christmas gift for the child that likes the unique...and it's not just another generic gift card.

This is a charming little book of 12 well-known Christmas Carols. The music is presented on the left, with the tapestry picture representing the carol on the right. The carols are very simply arranged musically,they could be easliy by played on the piano by a child who had reached Grade 2, or on the recorder or just simply sung. The chord arrangements make it easy to harmonise in two parts, the clef part (left-hand) is very simple.

What makes this little book so visually stunning is the tapestries. Belinda Downes uses richly coloured materials beautifully edged with gold, they really bring the carols to life.It is a real treat to sing along and admire the pictures. The whole story is encapsulated in each tapestry.
It would make a lovely present for a child who is starting to learn music or likes sewing or even both! As an adult I find the tapestries very charming and full of nostalgia, we get the book out every year, my children have mastered the music and they love it.

I really can't decide which of the twelve tapestries I like best, my three favourites are "O Little Town of Bethlehem" as the little houses are stitched so charmingly, tumbling down a hill, "Ding Dong Merrily on High" is very wittily put together with bell ringers swinging from a Belfry and "Joy to the World " has a globe surrounded by beautifully stitched little people in different national costume.

I would definitely recommend this little book.
