Two-time Caldecott Honor winner Nelson here gives up his studied compositions and meticulous applications of color in favor of quick, emotion-laden graphite sketches that commemorate Barack Obama's groundbreaking campaign and victory. Set to Obama's own words, gathered from several speeches given from 2004 to his acceptance speech on Nov. 4, 2008, the illustrations neatly provide visual accompaniment to the oratory.

I attendend President Obama's 2009 inauguration as an amateur photographer. Kadir Nelson's loose black and white sketches/drawings of this historical movement are an accurate representation of what I experienced. His rendering(s) of the American flag, the people holding signs, the different ethnicities within the massive crowds, and the overall joyous feel of this keepsake book are a wonderful depiction of this great American achievement.

While vigorously turning the pages to study the books art work, I found myself unconsciously reliving the moment as a result of Kadir's accurate representation. A moment of deja vu that pleasantly caught me by surprise and tranported me back to this time of historical significance that many believed would never come to fruition.

If you are a lover of history, someone who did not attend the inauguration, or someone who did attend as in my case, I with no reservations recommend you purchase "Change Has Come" by Kadir Nelson as a means of second handedly experiencing this most celebratory moment.

Respectively,
Jamusu.

This is a lovely little book with marvelous black ink drawings that beautifully memorialize events leading to the election of our first black President. Parts of Barack Obama's speeches are interspersed in this "to keep" book. I wanted more, a bigger book, more writing, more pictures, but this is just the beginning. May this feeling of hope follow with actions that will revive our country and its peoples.

It makes for a wonderful gift and I have given it to many of my friends. The art is great and of course the sayings speak for the self.

Before Barack Obama was elected the 44th President of the United States, I found myself hoping my son never gives me a grandchild. After the election, I wanted to put together a time capsule of the moment to give to him if he ever does. For now I have hope that bringing another innocent life into this world will not be as tragic an act as I had begun to fear.

This slim little hard-backed volume is a perfect commemorative. Kadir Nelson's drawings, especially (my favorite) the ones of people standing in line to vote at the polls, speak volumes in their impressionistic simplicity. All of Obama's words are not here, but the most emblematic of them are: "This is our moment. This is our time." "I promise you--we as a people will get there." "Yes We Can." "This time can be different"--coupled with a wonderful drawing of Joe Biden and Barack--and other memorable phrasings. "This is your victory." "Change has come to America."

At the end of the book, the dates and locations of the speeches from which Obama's words were taken are recorded so one can access them in their entirety, along with a heartfelt summation by the artist: "I wanted to celebrate that moment in history, and try to save a little bit of the magic that filled the air in Grant Park, and all over the country, all over the world." He captured how I felt, too, on election night: "Renewed and joyful. I'll never forget it."

And so this is a perfect keepsake of the time. I'm happy to be able to tuck it into my little time capsule box along with the black Freixenet champagne bottle from inaugural day and the buttons, bumper stickers, lawn signs, and other paraphernalia I collected over the course of the 2008 election.

It makes me smile just to think it again: "Yes, we did! And, yes, we can."

With the simple yet profound words of our 44th president, Kadir Nelson captures the unified passion of the American people in an incredible election year. The words are profound; the pictures simple.

As an adult, I read through this book in about 2 minutes flat. My first impressions were that the theme of unity was clearly portrayed and the sketches felt rushed but still wonderfully executed, if unfortunately presented on easily marred paper (hey, it's for kids!). For an older audience, obviously The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream or even this text as a coffee book with photographs of election nights throughout the country would have been more compelling. However, the target is children. Oddly, for me, the author's note at the end was most moving.

I agree with the targeted age being 4-8, as the lack of substance and further narrative render it inappropriate for an older age group. However, the lack of color on the pictures and use of non-laminated paper make this book a difficult choice for the 4-6 crowd. Our 4 year old is a rather passionate Obama supporter, having watched hours and hours of election night coverage for long months. A day hardly goes by that she does not mention him, and yet this book lost her interest rather quickly. Its quick sound bites and brief images just are not suitable for more than a conversation starter for an older crowd - maybe in a classroom setting with 7-9 year olds. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this book for younger children and would suggest that you look at it prior to purchasing for a young child. This is not a read alone book - rather a conversation starter.
