These walls have watched the witches;

the witches have watched the world.

These walls now turn against them --

some evil's been unfurled. . . .

The one thing any Halliwell witch has always been able to count on is Halliwell Manor, the ancestral home of the Charmed Ones and one of San Francisco's historical landmark homes. The grand old house has sheltered generations of women, and bits of Charmed history are practically built into the walls.

So when the Manor seems to have turned against its inhabitants, needless to say, the Halliwell sisters start to worry. It begins simply: The hot water heater is broken. No big: Leo's great around the house. But this is no simple plumbing problem. Soon, the Manor seems to be messing with the girls, Leo, and Wyatt in increasingly malicious ways. Thankfully, the Book of Shadows has created a safe zone for itself in the attic. But the Charmed Ones can hardly live up there forever. . . . Can they find out what's turned their safe haven into an evil lair before it's too late -- for the Manor, and for them?

Not much action, and the author tended to drone on with lengthy exposition and superficial pop psychology. But what really annoyed me was the author's frequent errors. The girls grew up in the house with their mother and father? WTF? And Phoebe casually whips up a gourmet dinner, including a chocolate souffle. PHOEBE? Since when does Phoebe cook at all? And I really don't think that the girls call each other "Sis" quite that often. Also, based on references to Phoebe's empath abilities, boyfriend Jason, and short hair, we must be in Season 6...but in that case, where is Chris??? (Incidentally, the idea of magical residue building up in the Manor and needing to be cleansed was the plot of the Season 5 episode "House Call". I find it odd that there wasn't at least a nod to the fact that the girls had faced this situation before. Of course, in the end, it turns out to be a somewhat different situation, but for much of the book I had such a strong sense of deja vu that I was sure the sisters must feel it too. I'm all for recycling story ideas if you make them new by tweaking them, but there should have been some acknowledgement of a similar past experience.)

I love this book, because again it's more Wyatt centric, they didn't give the kids nearly enough screentime on the show. And they've been all but glossed over in most of the books, so it's nice to read about them occasionally. Also, it's fun to see what happens when the "house," turns against them.

I am a very big fan of the Charmed books and have read several of them. This was definitely the most boring and all over the place story I've read yet. The plot is good and I liked what they were trying to do with the story but it just wasn't done very well. I would only buy it if you're collecting the Charmed books.

Strange things are going on at Halliwell Manor, the home of the Charmed Ones. Baby Wyatt is up to his usual tricks and keeps making giant versions of his favorite stuffed toys. But more sinister things are going on. First there is demonic plumbing. But that is quickly followed by black holes in the bathroom, talking food, and ghostly replays of a past that never happened. The only explanation is that the house has turned on the sisters and is trying to get rid of them. The Elders are their usual unhelpful selves and the Charmed Ones get set to purify their house. An idea that requires them to move out for a while.

But as even more strange and ghostly things begin to occur everyone wonders if their solution has any chance of working. New tactics are planned and planned for. More research is done. The girls stay in the house. Finally the true force is revealed but it will still be time before they fully understand it and are able to vanquish it. Will the Halliwell sisters manage to put it all together before the force wins? You will have to read the book to find out.

At just over 170 pages, this is one of the thinner Charmed tales. There is no real sense of dread or emergency in the writing. The witches seem rather casual about sticking around, eating and sleeping in a very dangerous place. At one point, after being under siege for some time, they come up with a new plan to save the day. But apparently stopping to eat a souffle (I kid you not) was more important. Considering this was written by the author of CHANGELING PLACES where the girls decided not to help innocents I can't say I am too surprised. Definitely at or near the bottom of the list of Charmed novels.
