Waldemar Bonsels (1880-1952) was a German writer of children's books. He wrote only one children's book in the strict sense, Die Biene Maja (The Adventures of Maya the Bee, 1912). People in the Sky (Himmelsvolk, 1915) is not a proper children's book but has a much deeper mystical layer showing the unity of all creation and its relationship to God. There are a number of novels and shorter stories dealing with love such as Eros and on the higher level of divine love in the spirit of romanticism (Eros und die Evangelien, Menschenwege, Narren und Helden, etc. ), with the relationship between man and nature in a simple life unchanged by modern civilization (Anjekind, etc. ) and also including a historical novel from the time of Jesus (Der Grieche Dositos). He travelled extensively in Europe and Asia. Indienfahrt (Voyage in India, 1916) is the fruit of one of these travels.

Just for the record this is a great story to read to your kids, as the five-stars above me have already said. This one star review is specifically for the "CreateSpace" published paperback that I bought. It's just a cheap printing of a Project Gutenberg free e-book file. In addition to just being tacky, none of the illustrations are here. Where the illustrations are supposed to be, the paragraphs of the story are just broken with the text:

"[illustration]".

I wish they were at least up front about this in the product description. I want to try to buy the hardcover now to see if that's a better edition, but don't want to shell out the extra money not knowing for sure what I'll end up getting. Is it an actual printing of the story and illustrations, or just another cheap reproduction with a hardcover?

First published in German in 1912, this series of adventures stars a young rebel bee who leaves the hive despite warnings to the contrary. She encounters good insects and bad, dangers and delights. The overarching theme of the book is a hit-you-over-the-head moral play: obey, work hard, be loyal.

Wikipedia advises that it was originally published as a fable with a political message. “Maya represents the ideal citizen, and the beehive represents a well-organised militarist society. It has also elements of nationalism and speciesism.”

I understand this is now also a comic book and an animated television series with its attendant marketed products. The moral of that series, I’m sure, is not what Bansels originally intended.

I absolutely loved this little book. I had read it as a child about ten times. Then lost my copy somewhere along the way between childhood and becoming an adult. it would cross my mine every so often through the years, and than I would forget about it. Now that the bee colonies are dying through the use of deadly pesticides I searched on Amazon and was delighted to find it again. You will never wonder about the power, magic, and service these hard working bees do for the world and humanity again. Maya is a hard working little bee that serves her queen and has quite a few adventures along with some dangerous situations.

This is not just a children's story; I first read it this year at age 74 & enjoyed it so much that I want it read to me when I'm about to pass on! The insights offered in perspective based upon each character's way of life (insects, spiders, etc.) shows how much we think we know based on how we perceive. One's past experiences color the view of things in hilarious ways. Polite behavior, the poetic appoach to all of nature herein ~ these are hallmarks of a book designed to teach, amuse, and enlarge our views. I had to read it aloud!

A classic written for children of all ages, but not at a minimal level. A child has to have at least a grade 4 reading level to enjoy this book, I think. (I am a teacher.) Bonsels writes simply, but uses a wonderful range of vocabulary. I recommend this book heartily, having read it when I was a child, and never having forgotten the charming story of Maya, a rebellious baby bee, who wants to be free to roam the beautiful world, which Bonsels unfolds to us through Maya's adventures with friend and foe alike. I read it to classes, gave it to my grandchildren, and continue to enjoy it every time I read it.

This is one of the sweetest books for all ages . I loved it when I was 4 years old. I read it with my husband in bed when we were young married and laughed, and laughed. Now with age 71 I bought it for a beekeeper and the same magic carried me in Maya's world.

This charming book was known to me from my childhood. It was originally published in Germany in 1922 and describes the adventures of a young bee that does not wish to conform to the work and standards in her hive. After many adventures with different kinds of flying and non-flying insects she is captured by a swarm of hornets. During her captivity she hears about a plan to destroy her hive, somehow escapes and succeeds in warning her home hive. Before giving the book to my grandchildren I wanted to re-read it and I did that with great pleasure. I warmly recommend it.
I came across this book as a young woman in 1965, my then deceased grandparents had the 1922 edition in German and I loved it. I have read it several times and think it is charming and educational at the same time. I have not started on the English version so far, but am looking forward to do so in the near future. I would like to send you a picture of my German book, since I know that the book cover changed very often, but I don' t know how to do it.

Maya is a young bee who was born to collect nectar and most important to learn the rules how to live in the orderly manner of the bee hive. But on her first outing she disobeys and does not return to the hive. Thus begins her adventurous journey , where she meets many other insects and learns how they live.
The story might not appeal to some young reader so much, as there is none of the violence that is so fashionable at the moment, though Maya has a few dangerous moments, eg. when she is caught in the spider's net or imprisoned by the hornets. I must correct myself: the fight between the hornets and the bees is quite violent and dramatic. But throughout the book there is love, friendship and wisdom.
A really beautiful story.
