I'm always amazed at the ability of Goscinny to weave several meaningful strands together and the atmosphere in Uderzo's illustrations. These books are really a treasure.

What is worse punishment in Rome than being incarcerated? Why, being given a parcel of land that happens to be an indomitable Gaulish village of course!

When a retiring Roman legionary named Tremensdelirius is arrested for insulting Julius Caesar the Emperor decides to have a little fun with him and present him with the deeds to a plot of land in Gaul that the Roman army has not been able to conquer. Mr. Tremensdelirius being a perpetual drunk means that he has soon bartered the deed for some booze giving the said new landlord, who is in the hospitality industry, impetus to relocate his scheming Parisian wife and cute daughter to the village.

With their arrival also comes disputes over land and ownership, dissension among the Gauls, political maneuvering, and vote buying through any and all means including ordering fish, anvils and selling coquettish sexual appeal. Oh yes, modern politics stems from a long tradition it seems.

Needless to say the fun never stops, there is plenty of amusement, the illustrations are a riot (and here even for a moment literally so) and 50BC is both introduced and indirectly compared to modern times it seems too.
Another strong entry from the golden age of the Asterix adventures. Between Goscinny's clever plot, complete with unexpected twists and turns;the well-named characters; the excellent translation; and of course the utterly convincing and satisfying artwork of the one and only Uderzo, there's really enough here to entertain and edify readers far beyond the 9 - 12 age range given in the product description. Particularly noteworthy in this episode are the opening panel (perfection!), the characteristically incisive commentary on human nature in all its guises, and the wonderful sequence where Asterix pulls of a desperate escape from a roman camp. One of the reasons most of the episodes released since Goscinny's death fail so miserably is that episodes like this one set the standard so incredibly high. This title is truly a high point, a gem, a gift. Enjoy.
