Several stanzas of verse, spread out over multiple pages, are dedicated to each sense, each scene focusing on familiar seashore activities of young children: dodging among the waves, constructing sandcastles, savoring the warmth of the sun. The gentle rhymes are at once descriptive and instructive, offering an almost tangible awareness of the ocean as well as an understanding of each particular sense.

I think this is a lovely, well written book. My daughter is now in love with this book. Being military, we were moved from the Gulf Coast of Florida (we were only 3 miles away from beautiful beaches) to the land locked state of Colorado (now don't get all upset, the mountains are beautiful, too). She asks daily to go to the beach. We read this book over and over again. She recalls all the wonderful times she had at the beach. I think it is helping her transition a bit. She even has most of the book memorized (she is under 3), we have read it so much. I would recommend this book to those people, who love the ocean and want to take a little of that beach experience home with them. As for the accusation that this book is somehow gender biased, because the main character happens to be a girl! Ha, ha, ha!!! The book has nothing to do with gender and everything to do with the beach. If my daughter couldn't relate to boys in books, then there would be a very short list of books she could enjoy. Most books have males as main characters, and we expect everyone to relate to them, because it isn't supposed to be about gender. I think this claim is ridiculous and should be ignored! In fact, I am purchasing us the hard cover version right now, and I intend to send the paperback to my nephews, because they love they beach as much as my daughter! Gender bias! Ha ha ha!

I bought this for my 2-year old boy who had all of the sudden developed a deep fear of the ocean and pools, and we had a trip planned to San Diego that we didn't want to cancel. I thought this might help ease his fears. He absolutely loves looking at the pictures. It's quite soothing and depicts the sounds, smells, etc. very well. Some of the text is a little advanced for him, but he enjoys the rhyming. It's also very good for a relaxing bedtime story - as it ends with the sun setting and saying goodnight to the ocean and that we'll be back again. (P.S. He did great in San Diego and swam everyday. I do think this book helped a bit.)

This book is written in poetic verse, so it wasn't good to use as an example of mentor sentences with my students. However it makes a great read-aloud for my students.

The gorgeous illustrations are what really made me give this book 5 stars. The rhyming text is unique and interesting, using vocabulary that will enrich and expand your lexicon. We read this book to my son for a few weeks before our first trip to the beach, and I think it helped to prepare him for what he would experience there.

I am completely head-over-heels in love with this book! Even if I did not have a child of my own, I would want this in my personal library. This book is all about a day at the beach as experienced through the five senses. The illustrations are very beautiful, very realistic. The whole story is just pure poetry.

This book uses the five senses (sight, sound, touch, taste, smell) to wonderfullly describe the ocean. Not only is it beautifully written, but the illustrations are amazing - making you feel as if you're standing on the beach yourself. My 2 1/2 year old loves this book and asks me to read it to him over and over again. After borrowing this book from the library, we've decided to purchase our own copy.
I'm a homeschooling mother therefore I am constantly looking for good educational material. This book has the most beautiful illustrations I've ever seen, each one is a work of art. The book is written in rhyme which children love. It is however not very educational, but still; not a bad read.
