Colloquial Chinese by Kan Qian is exactly the resource I was seeking when I set out to learn Chinese. Vocabulary and points of grammar and usage are introduced in dialogues followed by clear explanatory notes. The dialogues are realistic and varied, starting with an appropriately slow and stilted first meeting at the airport and moving on to flirting, shopping and catching up with old friends. English translations are in colloquial British; for instance, as an American I was glad that my Chinese friend pointed out that the word translated as "smart" referred to attractiveness rather than intelligence before I had a chance to embarrass myself by giving the wrong compliment.

It would be hard to imagine a beginning textbook which could set a novice learner of Mandarin more at ease. From the sections on pronunciation that start out this book, on to the carefully crafted dialogues and well-explained grammar, a student will never feel overwhelmed by the aspects of Chinese that are unfamiliar to a non-native speaker (nearly all of them, in other words). Unlike many other books in the Routledge Colloquial series, almost nothing is used in the lessons that is not clearly elucidated right then and there- Even in early lessons, where the occasional resultative compound ('kanshangqu', which idiomatically means 'it seems') there are no lurking surprises or unsolved mysteries left to plague the student in future lessons. Vocabulary is very useful and everyday, basic principles of writing Chinese characters are demonstrated very clearly (although handwritten examples would have been nice as well as printed forms) and best of all, there is a Book 2 to go on to- and by the time a student finishes this first volume, they should be able to go on to it with a great deal of confidence and anticipation.

I bought this product because I wanted to brush up on my mandarin, which I learned over 20 years ago. I thought it was well organized and the explanations were clear and concise. The author pointed out grammar points which I never learned in school, and cleared up somethings which I always wondered about! I only gave it 4 stars because I wish it had a more extensive vocabulary list and also some of the vocabulary in the dialogues are not listed in the vocabulary list in the back, which made me have to search through the previous chapters, which I found a little irritating. Overall, I have been very happy with it, and if they ever make a Volume 2, I will be sure to buy it!
Be sure to get the version with the CDs, as hearing the pronunciation of the words is really important. A previous reviewer commented that the speakers do not have a Beijing accent. I think this is true. They sounded like my Chinese teacher years ago, who was from Taiwan.

This is, in my view, the best introduction to Mandarin; if my evaluation of the book were based solely on how useful it is and how clear the explanations, I would give it 5 stars. But the book is marred by a large number of mistakes, mostly typos. I don't know if this is just in the Kindle edition - but it is very irritating. Moreover, the chinese characters are very small and in a faint grey in the Kindle edition - so that I find it impossible to study those in the e-version.

Chinese is not easy to learn. This book does not magically make Chinese easy to learn. I don't think any book can do that. But it does a good job at teaching it. It has a good amount of pictures and practice problems.

5 stars = It helps you understand every small detail about Chinese language
5 stars = CDs help alot. There is no way you can learn how to pronounce the initials and the finals without hearing them from the CDs that come with the book. You got to buy the bundle version to have the CDs!!!

I recommend this book to everybody who has a heart filled with love for Chinese language! (this book is for beginners, you got to buy the second book to be an advanced Chinese speaker and writer)
