Every flower that one could think of, and of every season, stood there in fullest bloom; no picture-book could be gayer or more beautiful. Gerda jumped for joy, and played till the sun set behind the tall cherry-tree; she then had a pretty bed, with a red silken coverlet filled with blue violets. She fell asleep, and had as pleasant dreams as ever a queen on her wedding-day. The next morning she went to play with the flowers in the warm sunshine, and thus passed away a day.

Seventh Story: Of the Palace of the Snow Queen and What Happened There At Last. When she afterwards brought out the picture book, he said, It was only fit for babies in long clothes, and when grandmother told any stories, he would interrupt her with but; or, when he could manage it, he would get behind her chair, put on a pair of spectacles, and imitate her very cleverly, to make people laugh.

The Snow Queen is a great story, if you want to read it at that level, with a steady quick pace and just one twist after another that loops into a seamless ending. Beautiful retelling of an original story by Hans Christian Andersen. Amazing pictures by Mary Engelbreit.

This book is BEAUTIFUL.

Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) was a Danish author. He is best remembered for his fairy tales. This book is BEAUTIFUL. it seems like every page has a surprise, and I love that they included the entire original fairytale. I am a grown-up who is reluctantly sharing this with my young nieces who are just as enchanted by it as I am. The pop-ups work well- a few need coaxing to fully display, but I don't mind that. The pop-ups in this book are intricate and beautiful, and they really bring the story to life.
