This book is for parents who want to introduce their children to the political process at an early age. The adorable illustrations make it easy to get the young ones involved. Dibs decides to run for President for altruistic reasons. He campaigns first in Iowa, then New Hampshire. SC and Fl don't get mentioned, but the parents can supply this if they think it wise to do so considering attention spans. So the parents don't get bored and therefore too didactic for the little ones, Morris has scattered puns throughout -- Karl Rover, political consultant; a poll-taking horse named Gallop; America's enemies Fido Castro, Vladimir Poodle; Hugo Chihuahua; etc. Winning the nomination from the Canine Party, Dibs campaigns across the country making the expected campaign promises, and wins the election. The Feline Party loses. Then comes the moment of truth. Faced with enormous and complex responsibilities, he realizes he isn't qualified to be President. He doesn't have any idea what to do next. Hints as to domestic and foreign policy issues give the parents an opportunity to ad lib as much of this information as the children are mature enough to absorb. If not now, later. Sixty years ago, when my children were young, I would have given a week's pay for this book, to help me get my children involved in the political process of a constitutional republic. Just don't expect a first-grade coloring book to contain eighth-grade American History educational material as some reviewers seem to do.

This is a beautiful little book with such humor and realism in seeing Dubs run against a cat for President. I recommend this for any child to hook him/her on American politics. The story is cute and the lessons will spark that interest in civics.

We owned a beloved golden retriever for many years and Dubs is a fun reminder of ours. This book is very good for reading to a child and letting him guess (finish) the last rhyming word at the end of each stanza. They are then able to participate in the story. Actually, whole family, young and old enjoyed it's cadence. The pictures are really cute with the fun of finding a hidden tennis ball in each illustration. The tennis ball is lime green and though hidden well it is findable in the half color, half penciled sepia pictures. Truly delightful!
I am having the companion book, "Dubs Goes to Washington" overnighted as I just found out I am meeting my 4 yr. old grandson, Charles Atticus, in D.C. this weekend. These books will be our Washington guide!
