Second-grader Ricky Torres is mortified! He made a big mistake while reading aloud in class and his friends laughed at him. Embarrassed and determined never to read out loud again, Ricky soon runs into an even bigger problem. His favorite author, Mr. Robert Bennett, plans to visit the school. In honor of this event, Ricky's teacher, Ms. Colman, has decided that her class will write and illustrate their own short stories. The author of the best story must read his work for the visiting author while other students act out the plot. The class decides that Ricky's tale, "Juicy Lucy," is the best story in the whole class. Naturally, Ricky balks at the idea of reading his work for Mr. Bennett, but Ms. Colman won't allow him to attend Author Day if he won't participate in the performance. Can Ricky overcome his fear of public speaking, and read "Juicy Lucy" for his hero?

"The Kids in Ms. Colman's Class: Author Day" is a cute and engaging story for young chapter book readers. While Ricky's ongoing refusal (and his reason for refusing) to read out loud isn't very realistic, it's doubtful young readers will seriously question that part of the story. The class' preparations for Author Day makes schoolwork seem fun and exciting, and are sure to make readers wish that a famous author would visit their school, too. Children will love the end of the story, when the day yields more than one surprise for our young Ricky.
