My almost 4 year old son LOVES this book and even my 2 year old will sit through it. We are trying to get our boys to use more Spanish (mixed heritage) and this is a great way to do that. Every page is full of brilliant Latin colors; we could stare at the pages and be happy.

illustrated by Elisa Kleven. This soaring story takes readers on a fantastic journey set in the same world and warm relationship as Arthur Dorros's award-winning Abuela! Isla by Arthur Dorros. So often kids are told to wait until they’re older to participate in activities. But this determined girl isn’t brushed off so easily.

What makes the book so interesting is Dorros's integration of Spanish words and phrases via Abuela's dialogue within the English text. While some phrases are translated by the child, others will be understood in context. As insurance, a glossary, which provides definitions and pronunciations, is appended. The illustrations sing out a celebration of the love and joy that underlies the brief, straightforward narrative.

This story has everything I enjoy in a children's book: good story line, some adventure, family themes, and great illustrations. The younger reader will be enthralled with the story when the book is read out loud and older children will be just as interested when they read the book themselves. The colorful illustrations are full of detail and I can envision children spending a lot of time looking at the pictures and finding lots of things to talk about with their parent(s).

My grandson LOVED this book. He read it to me three nights in a row. Now it's "Our Book" - creative and educational. Great stuff for kids to get in touch with their rich heritage. Highly recommend!!

I purchased this book for a lesson plan for my kindergarten class. It actually took my by surprise that kindergartners were already learning Spanish/English books. For Comprehension, this is a book that will need to be read a few times for children to break apart and understand.

The illustrations in this book are beautiful. My first and second graders love this story. We start out by asking each student the name they use for their grandmother/abuela. The lesson using this wonderful book is a good one! It takes me back to times with my grammy and our adventures doing dances through her dining room and living room, working in her garden, walking to the park hand and hand.
I just LOVE this book. I have bought over a dozen copies over the years. I think children love it because it's about a little girl's relationship with her grandma, and most children have such a wonderful and special relationship with heir grandparents. And it is very validating, I think, especially, for children who are living in a Spanish/English speaking household in that it incorporates flawlessly some Spanish words. This book is also available in Spanish.
