Eyewitness Books (or Eyewitness Guides) is a series of nonfiction books intended for children and young adults. They were first published in England by Dorling Kindersley in 1988. The series now has over one hundred titles on a variety of subjects, such as dinosaurs, Ancient Egypt, flags, chemistry, music, the solar system, film, and William Shakespeare.

An up-close look at World War I examines life in the trenches and the devastation of Europe by the Great War.
Global Progression
DK, an innovative publisher, has produced two books with a somewhat similar title. The one reviewed briefly here is "DK Eyewitness Books: World War I"; the other is called simply "World War I" by H.P. Willmott, a very knowledgeable military historian. I bought the Eyewitness Book and was initially distressed that it only had about one hundred large pages, although it was profusely illustrated. I then bought the Willmott book which has over three hundred even larger illustrated pages and was very impressed.

I then took a second look at the Eyewitness book, This time I was impressed. I realized that the book came with a "Clip-Art CD" disk that contains a very large amount of relevant material, divided into the chapters on the many issues connected to World War I. There are even a number of You-Tube type videos. In addition, the book is profusely illustrated on every page, making the Great War come alive in a way that no book without DK's images could do. Quite possibly, it contains as much material as the Wilmott book.

I will be teaching a graduate course on World War I in the spring semester 2014 in our University's College of Public and International Affairs. I decided on the course last September when I realized that 2014 marks the hundredth anniversary of the start of the Great War in 1914.

It has been said that the twentieth century began with the Great War. Millions, both military and civilian, died in that war and the world is still living with its dangerous legacy. I strongly recommend this book which I will certainly recommend it to my students.

Gift ... recipient loved it

I picked this book with the other books in this series out as a birthday gift for my grandson. He has become very interested in history. He also has expressed interest in the military and American Wars. My wife is a retired school teacher and stated that she was familiar with this book series. She stated that it was an excellent book for a youth learning experience. But the next important thing is he was beyond excited when realized what it was.

Great "grown-up" picture book for my non-reading adult autistic son. He loves it!

My grandson, age 11, loved these books. He studied each photo and
illustration! Great for anyone interested in the civilian and the military
side of life during WWI

This is an excellent book for someone who wants the big picture without a lot of extra detail. The photos and pictures are excellent and the interest level is very high. The way topics are presented helps one to see the big picture. There are many small tidbits of information that are not usually given in books on this topic.

We have several of the eyewitness books and love them all. The schools don't teach children about World War I or II
as part of history and I think kid need to know about them as mush as the Civil War.
Pretty much boiler-plate stuff that I've seen before in other references. Okay for a beginner to Great War studies.
