I'd like to give this book 31/2 stars, because I rate it as better than average but not really good.

This book covers many explorers I'd never heard of before, which is half of what I wanted for my child. The timelines on the bottom of the pages were the best feature of the book, and not one I've seen elsewhere.

Unfortunately the other half of what I wanted was to find a book about explorers that was engaging. This book was dry and repetitive. My daughter tired of it quickly and retained very little. This book would be a good resource in studying explorers, but it doesn't work well alone.

My son is very interested in "REAL" stories; not so much made up pretend fluff & twaddle of children's fiction. He thinks it is more interesting if it REALLY HAPPENED, and he loves maps, so this book seemed ideal. I should have checked the "look inside" more carefully. That 1st bit about "Scientist disagree is our ancestors are ape A or ape B" is a bit unnerving. I'll qualify that hubby and I are both HIGHLY technical/engineering professionals; college "Science" degrees - so not to be dismissed as "some sort of fundamentalists". I think however there is room for, and need to, respect different perspectives, including traditional beliefs. Why does an "Explorers" book even need to MENTION human origins? They could have just started with "It is believed that all humans were originally in the land region currently known as Africa, from there..." and go into the migrations/exploration aspects. But, since dear little son cannot read independently yet... I skip the ape part and the book is good.

The Picture History of Great Explorers offers very colorful and engaging pictures as it guides the reader through a pictorial history of explorers from the earliest explorers who entered America to the exploration of space. Maps provide the reader with visual images of the actual routes taken by these brave and adventurous men as their stories are shared in an engaging and knowledgeable format. Very helpful for teachers wishing to share the excitement of exploration with their students. Includes many of the explorers traditionally studied as well as some less-known ones.
