Amazing Stories is an American science fiction magazine launched in April .

Amazing Stories is an American science fiction magazine launched in April 1926 by Hugo Gernsback's Experimenter Publishing. It was the first magazine devoted solely to science fiction. In the late 1940s Amazing presented as fact stories about the Shaver Mystery, a lurid mythos that explained accidents and disaster as the work of robots named deros, which led to dramatically increased circulation but widespread ridicule. Despite this, Gernsback had an enormous impact on the field: the creation of a specialist magazine for science fiction spawned an entire genre publishing industry.

The stories of his prowess are so legendary that they are frankly a little hard to believe. It’s said that he once outran a horse in a 22-mile race to deliver a message. The writer of King Solomon’s Mines, who was a friend of Burnham’s, said that the man was more of an action hero than anyone in his books. Another friend, Robert Baden-Powell, cited him as an influence when he created the Boy Scouts. However, it was a very real attempt to overthrow the leadership of Equatorial Guinea - and Simon Mann was right in the middle of it all. Mann was a well-connected British ex-SAS dude who had dug his roots deep into the mercenary business.

My daughters (Ages 11 and 7) really enjoyed me reading through this book as we studied American History last year. We read 2-10 pages a week. For example, as we studied the early 1900's we read the "newspaper" articles entitled "ESCALATOR TAKES 1st PRIZE AT WORLD'S FAIR," "COOL KIDS CRAVE CRAYOLA CRAYONS!," "TWO BICYCLE MECHANICS LAUNCH INCREDIBLE FLYING MACHINE," and "NOVOCAIN MAKES DENTIST VISITS FUN!." Sometimes the reading is a little silly, but I think it really helps them remember what we've learned. The "newspaper" page also includes little headlines of info. about other things that happened around that same time period in history. I'm not sure this would be a good book to read from cover to cover, all at once. But, it sure worked nicely reading it little by little throuhout the school year. The book was very creative.
