These novels are generally written by Americans and deal in some way with the question of America's national character. The Great American Novel is sometimes considered America's equivalent of the national epic. There is no consensus on which novel or novels deserve to be called the Great American Novel

Historical Fiction for Young Readers. I first discovered this book as a young child by listening to it on tape from my local library. I have since then read this book at least 30 times. I used to check out those tapes all the time.

Historical Fiction for Young Readers. I love the story of a young girl, travelling alone to live with her aunt in San Francisco and her experiences there including the great San Francisco earthquake of 1906. JessBass87, December 2, 2016.

Whittling all historical fiction books into one manageable list is impossible, truly . Instead of putting together a list of the 223,546 best historical fiction books, I opted instead for adult historical fiction showstoppers that present a wide array of time periods, places, characters, and more. We read historical fiction because we want to travel through time and space. A historical fiction definition seems simple enough: it’s fiction that takes place in the past. Description: A gorgeous novel by the celebrated author of When the Emperor Was Divine that tells the story of a group of young women brought from Japan to San Francisco as picture brides nearly a century ago.

Lavina Cumming has spent her entire first ten years of life on the Bosque Ranch in Arizona Territory with her mother and father, five brothers, and her black mustang pony, Chummy. When her mother dies, her father decides it would be best if Lavina went to live with her aunt, where she can be brought up as a lady.Starting off at dawn on September 16, 1905, Lavina travels by train to Santa Cruz, California. Armed with the Cumming family motto—"courage"—she arrives in a world of two-storey houses, automobiles, a new school, and her cousin, "awful Aggie." Trying her best to settle in, Lavina is torn by her hopes to return to Arizona and be with her father. She is as shocked as everyone else by the great earthquake that nearly demolishes the nearby city of San Francisco. In the aftermath of the quake, she must make a big decision about her future. This is a really wonderful book, and having lived in both Southeast Arizona and Santa Cruz, California, I can attest to the vivid accuracy of the author's details in capturing the essence of each of these very different places, both the physical place and its people. The main character, Lavina Cumming, is a person the reader will greatly enjoy getting to know: strong, sensitive, full of life, down-to-earth, warm, and big-hearted.

Lavina (pronounced with long "i" sound) is a young girl of Scottish descent who grew up as a cowgirl in the Arizona desert speaking both English and Spanish; she's now off to California to live with her aunt to learn how to be a lady.

The summary sounded interesting and I enjoyed the first few chapters as they flew by. For the most part I enjoyed it until the Halloween chapter, then came the story of the witch who ate babies (not very amusing). I did like the rest of the book though. The author used great storytelling abilities to weave in flashbacks and family stories right into what was currently happening. The descriptions in the book tell many accurate facts of the historical time period, including the great San Francisco earthquake of 1906.

Lavina is a ten-year-old girl who lives at the Bosque Ranch in the Arizona territory in the early 1900's. Her mother died, and her father is sending her to live in California with her aunt. When she arrives, she steps into a whole different world. Sometimes her Aunt Agnes reminds her of her father. Her aunt has a daughter named Maude, and Maude has a daughter, Aggie, who is eight. It's hard to get along with Aggie, but Lavina makes friends at school. Lavina has a fight with her aunt one night, and she plans to run away in the morning, but something big happens before she gets the chance. This is a well-written book.

This is an awesome story that captured the real essence of life near the AZ-MX border. It is also very inspiring specially the great strength and perseverance shown by Lavina. It is very good example for every young ladies. It also showcases the natural cleverness and wisdom learned from the very unique interaction with man and nature along the beautiful landscape of Southern Arizona. Another great bonus of this novel is the authentic stories included that wrapped up the historical facts of early Southern Arizona territories. The author should be commended in having this novel. I can not wait to share this great story with other students in school.
