Open almost any of the award-winning books, and out may pop dragons, cuddly monsters, wonderful creatures, and endearing critters. Most of my books are about things that happened to me when I was a little kid," says Mercer. Now that I'm a big kid, I write about things that happen now, especially with my own children. They always help remind me of what it was like.

Born in Little Rock, Arkansas, Mercer Mayer spent his childhood hunting lizards and snakes in the swamps near his home. During his teenage years, he attended the Honolulu Academy of Arts. He later received additional training at the Art Students League in New York City.

First came a boy and his dog. Then they found a frog. The story is clear but open to interpretation by a small child. I will look for additional titles by Mayer. A Boy, a Dog and a Frog Series Mercer Mayer. I gave this book to friends with a two and a half year old. He loves it. In the beginning mom and dad "read" it to him and, of course, their stories were different which delighted him. A Boy, a Dog, and a Frog. Frog, Where Are You? Mercer Mayer. Frog on His Own. A big nuisance of a turtle has made off with the boy's fishing rod, bitten the dog's paw, pulled him into the water by his tail, and, after being followed by the frog, has disappeared, only to reappear floating on his back. Is it so strange for a turtle to float? Not to most children, who'll think the boy poling the turtle toward shore really strange. Somehow or other, sooner (for some) or later (for others), it all gets straightened out: the boy, the dog and the frog, thinking the turtle dead, are about to bury him when he rights himself and there is general rejoicing.

This review is in response to a previous reviewer's comments that she did not realize that the book was wordless. She gave the impression that she was disappointed by receiving a wordless book, which her nephew cannot "read."

I agree that it should be more clear that this book is wordless, but I would encourage you not to discount it on this basis. The book is very funny, and wordless books help children develop linguistic and narrative skills. Have the child "read" the book to you, or his parents. You can also tell the story to him at exactly his linguistic level (or slightly above it), not with the one-size-fits-all vocabulary and syntax of other children's books. It would be great if you could notice where he struggles in his descriptions when reading the book, and then expand upon his attempts the next time you read it to him. If you give it a chance, you might like a wordless book.. and so might your nephew.

Great book! I used it for a class in school. It is wordless but offers such great illustrations! I used it for a 10 year old to write his own story on sticky notes. He loved that project. Great for preschoolers too!

Bought 24 copies to share with my daughters kindergarten class. Students love having their own book to read along with the rest of the class. We take turns telling the story we see on each page and then they draw a story picture of their own.

This series, evocative pictures with no words, are the best thing ever for kids who can read, or not. They love these books for MANY years and it is fun to "tell" them the story, or have them "tell" it to you or themselves. It was the first book my grandspn, at age 1 1/2, LOVED, and picked every time, to "read". When I bought him the whole series, he loved them. (My sons also loved them, and saved them!) Mercer Meyer, of course, is a genius. All kids love the Frog series!

Great storytelling without any words at all. Wonderful for my grandsons and the deaf children I work with.

I love this book and it arrived in perfect condition.

A great book without words to aid a child in developing speech. The child can be creative and tell a story using his/her words. As the child's vocabulary grows, so do the stories the child tells.
I used to read this series to my children. Now my grandchildren love them!
