In 1973, Cherry moved north to New York City, where jobs with publishing companies were plentiful. She was quickly hired by Platt & Munk, Bronx, where she worked as a paste-up artist and designer until moving to Harcourt Brace Jovanovich in 1974 to work as a book designer.
