A glossary of geographic terms, from "archipelago" to "zones," with definitions and descriptions of the Earth's features
This book is really well done. Though it is targeted for children, this 40-plus year old found it very informative. After searching through the adult catalog at the local library for a book that would explain landforms and earth features and finding nothing, I found this book in the young people's collection. It was a Godsend. I found it so useful, that I am now purchasing it for my personal library.
If you, like me, have never been clear in your own mind about the difference between a hill and a mountain; a mesa and a butte; a brook, creek, or stream; a river, lake or pond; a sea and an ocean; a canyon and a gorge, and on and on, then this book will painlessly de-mystify these terms for you and many more.
Thanks to the authors and publishers of this fine book, I am less dumbfounded by my physical surroundings, and at least know now what I probably should have learned in grade school
This paperback is much thinner than I expected. It is incredibly colorful and easy to ready for kids, but it is not a stand alone teaching tool for Geography. It is a companion tool or beginners book of simple definitions.
This is a great book for young kids who are interested in non-fiction, science or the outdoors. I would say that this is appropriate for grades 1st through 4th grade. The pictures are well done and the book includes a wide variety of geography terms, including archipelago, atoll, badland, butte, cape, continent, fjord, ford, geyser, glacier, gulch, highland, isthmus, key, marsh, mountain pass, ocean ridge, reef, sound, straight, swamp, tundra, and volcano. This is *not* an all-inclusive list.
We purchased this for our five year old son. We bought a few other geography items as well to supplement his education at home. This book is easy to understand and offers great illustrations to help explain the vocabulary word. You have words such as, Atoll, Ford, Palisade, River, Swamp, Tundra, and Waterfall. Each word has its own picture to make the explanations easy to digest. The text is short - about 2-3 sentences for each feature described. I would recommend this book as a nice geography picture book for children probably from about ages 4-8 (the book states from ages 7-10 but it seems geared towards younger children in my opinion). Happy learning!!
I did not give it 5 stars because my child is not very interested in this book but it is certainly a wonderful book to add your elementary child's non-fiction collection. As a former middle school teacher I was truly impressed with the level of vocabulary introduced in child-friendly terminology and easy to understand (yet simple) art work. If you are looking for something much more engaging and detailed to enhance your geography collection I suggest "Maps" by Aleksandra Mizielinska.
I bought this book for our geography unit and it has been such a smart investment. It is structured like a dictionary and I use it to create week-long projects around the specific geographical formation.

For example, if we are talking about glaciers, then I create a weekly lesson about the geography, biology and social aspects of the regions. Kids can build story books about the item and we can read books about it....

I would recommend this for structured schools or homeschooling parents.
I used this book for quick visual references to re-enforce the vocabulary of geography. Nicely done, short and to the point.
I would not say that this is the best purchase I have made for our homeschool but it is not the worst. The book has colorful illustrations and basic definitions. Many of the definitions relate back to others so you can not just look up some words independently. It is a good book for an early reader to explore with on their own however and has helped foster an interest in geography in my little ones.
