Harold Ellens takes a comprehensive look at a controversial topic in an amazingly brief book (102 pages, plus notes, extensive bibliography, and index). Frequently, Ellens notes the connection between spirituality and sexuality whether the Bible is for or against various kinds of sexual behavior, it i.on the grounds that bad sex damages us and good sex is good for us, just like false worship undermines our authentic spirituality and true worship enhances our spirituality. He corrects our impressions with a look at the Scriptures themselves, considers what they might have meant to people in the past, and reflects on how we understand, or misunderstand, them today.

What is the Bible's stance on such controversial issues as homosexuality and polygamy? What does it have to say about sexual behaviors that some would deem perverted or criminal? Is sex always wrong if it is not used to create life?

Ellens answers these and other questions in a book that argues that our understanding of what the Bible has to say about sex is frequently misguided. He corrects our impressions with a look at the Scriptures themselves, considers what they might have meant to people in the past, and reflects on how we understand, or misunderstand, them today. Focusing on early interpretations and contemporary misconceptions, Ellens guides readers through what the Bible actually says, showing how these messages have been interpreted in different contexts, and suggesting new ways of reading and translating them for use in our own lives. Readers hoping to reach a better understanding of the Bible's views on sexual practices and sexuality in general will find their questions answered here.

What does the story of Adam and Eve reveal about sex and sexuality? What does the Old Testament say about sex and how might we interpret that in our own lives today? How does the New Testament say we should behave in our sexuality and our lives? What lessons can we learn from a closer examination of the Bible and its teachings on human love, marriage, and sexuality? These are among the many questions Ellens answers in an effort to help us all come to a better understanding of the gift of sexuality and its attendant behaviors in our lives. In non-judgmental prose, he elucidates the Bible and our understanding of its teaching on these and related issues.

It's a tad difficult to sound the trumpets on this book. The end thoughts I've had after reading it are that our biblical ancestors were pretty much a horny bunch. Having said that I believe that everyone should have a copy in their library/ because this book touches everyone of us if we are honest. Think, celebrating love, making love, sex laws, marriage, incest, homosexuality, monogamy, making babys......it's all there and if you're like me you won't put the book down until you've explored the whole lot. A great read, whether you're a bible thumper or not. This book is NOT bias.

I purchased this book to assist with sex and our culture. I like the fact that the author challenges the reader and all BUT he leaves room for re-interpretation of truth. Case and point -- Cocain is not mentioned in the Bible but does this make it legal for me to do to the glory of God? I guess that this will be the debate until we get to heaven but I rather err on the side of caution opposed to meeting my savior face-to-face and he tells me I made a mockery of what he wanted people to know about him.

Sex in the Bible offers perspectives from a psychologist, an army chaplain, a pastor, and a Biblical scholar- all the same person. It is rare to have such a combination, all at a high level.

The book is well-written and easy to follow. There are a number of topics that are treated in an intriguing way: the sexuality of God; a re-examination of the story of Onan from multiple perspectives; the relationship between sexuality and spirituality; the evolution of religious teaching because of Thomas Aquinas and Saint Jerome; the interconnections between the Hebrew Bible, the Christian Bible, and Islam's Qur'an; and even the current pedophilia crisis. A book that causes you to re-think concepts you thought you understood is very helpful to intellectual and spiritual development.

The insights Dr. Ellens shares reveal not only his deep love of God, but also humanity.

While Ellens does a good job of breaking down strict stereotypes surrounding sexuality, I've found that he unfortunately tends to make a lot of claims or assumptions that are either not backed up by Scripture or appear to be his own personal moral view. Either way, it is misleading for the reader. He claims that while sex within marriage is obviously ok, so is "sexual communion between unmarried consenting adults within a meaningful friendship, and premarital sexuality between persons exploring the possibility of or engaged in a potential marriage contract." (p.35) While there may be no direct biblical injunction against such sexual contact, Ellens never reveals to his readers by what evidence he has reached such conclusions.

Truly mind opening. A perspective that makes sense historically and for today's world. Highly recommended!
