The NKJV New Geneva/Reformation Study Bible didn’t seem to have much circulation outside of confessional Reformed churches. Unfortunately, when the ESV version of the Reformation Study Bible was issued a couple of years after the NIV SRSB, the study notes and articles were not revised or enhanced from the original NKJV version and no additional material was included.

I have the Leather version of the NIV Spirit of the Reformation Study Bible (SORSB). It is one of my favorite bibles and I always thought it would make a great Kindle bible. That may still be true, but this first attempt is a total failure. First it is more expensive that most of the other good kindle Study bibles. That sets expectations high. The SORSB hard version has in the study notes, references to the major Catechism and confessions material in the back. A great feather. I expected these to all be hyperlinked in the Kindle version but they are not. Here is what makes this such a disaster. When you see there is a reference to say WSC 5, you should have a hyperlink, but instead you have to go to the Table of Contents, find Articles, go there, and then find WSC. Here you would hope for quick hyperlinks but those are also missing. So instead of using this version to expedite my bible study, it slows it way down. FAIL.
The TEXT is WAY Larger than any of the other text of my other Kindle books. It is the size of a first grade reader book. Total Fail.

What a missed opportunity for a great Kindle Bible. Instead you get what has the feel of a project that was commissioned from a high school nerd club to try their hand at creating a Kindle Book, using content (the Bible) they have never encountered and are unaware of how users expect the Kindle version to work. Total FAIL.

Bottom line, compared to my hard copy, the Kindle version is clunky, and almost unusable. I have a Reformation phone app with the confessions and Catechisms that is way more user friendly that the design of this kindle book. It only cost $1.99.

I have one or two other Kindle Study bibles (like ESV study bible) and they were designed by professionals who understood the needs of their readers. I cannot recommend the KINDLE version of this bible. As a Kindle book it is bad. As a Kindle Bible, it is a disaster.

The Spirit of the Reformation Study Bible

The first Bible that I will tell you about is called "The Spirit of the Reformation Study Bible." This is one of the two Bibles that I use in my teaching and preaching ministry here at Faith EPC. Published by Zondervan, this study tool is excellent for several reasons. First of all, the study notes are entirely from our Reformed theological perspective. Many of the Bibles on the market today have study notes, but not all are specifically from our rich theological perspective as Presbyterians. This Bible features the scholarly input of incredible academics such as Richard Pratt, Bruce Waltke, John Frame, and Roger Nicole (all from Reformed Theological Seminary), as well as J.I. Packer, James Montgomery Boice, Sinclair Ferguson, and Wayne Grudem--all of whom I greatly respect and admire. The interesting feature of this Bible, besides its copious notes, is that it cross-references the great confessions of the Reformed faith, including a full-text of the Westminster Confession and Catechisms as appendices. This Bible has all the great tools that any study Bible should: maps, charts, book introductions, and of course, thousands of comments and Scripture explanations. I like this Bible so much that I bought an extra one for when my current one wears out--which it will soon! (Note: Virtually the same Bible is also sold under the name "The Reformation Study Bible," as marketed by R.C. Sproul and Ligonier ministries. The difference is that the latter comes in the ESV and NKJV translations, but not the NIV.

I received this superb Bible in 2003 as a gift. It was much more than I thought it would be. It uses the smooth and accurate NIV translation (Dr. James Montgomery Boice loved the NIV and preached from it for many years).

It has 66 articles of deep interest to any Christian. The articles cover such things as: How to Pray, Can You Lose Your Salvation? Does God Know Everything? Does God Love Everyone? What is Hell Like? And there are many more articles to enjoy and profit from.

Perhaps the greatest find were the reformed confessions in the back of the Bible. There are six of them and they also are mentioned throughout the notes of this Bible. If you are reading a passage in Romans it might direct you to the Westminster Confession of Faith and what that states about the doctrine at hand. The confessions are: The Belgic Confession, The Heidelberg Catechism, The Canons of
Dort (so helpful in explaining the Biblical teaching on salvation), The Westminster Confession of Faith, The Westminster Larger Catechism and the Westminster Shorter Catechism.

The Bible itself is large- about 2230 pages, has an excellent binding, the print is not that bad and had to be a bit smaller to pack so much between its covers. It is gold mine of practical and devotional notes and solid reformed teaching. If you mastered all the concepts in this Bible you would be a profound Bible scholar. I have seen the amazing ESV Study Bible but I put this Bible a few rungs higher up than even that one. There simply is no better study Bible available although sadly it is out of print.

Calvin and Luther probably would have required this Bible for their students and congregations!
